But Osnap uses Micro Adhesion so you're not actually glueing. I think that the magsafe magnet thing will end up being a failure.
Ohsnap uses a metal ring that has 3M tape on one side. You tape that to your case, or as I did to the bottom of my MagSafe charger puck. Once stuck on there, it requires a lot of force and might to remove. I know, because I ruined my Apple clear case when I removed the metal ring. All I can say, is the metal ring isn't going to fall or pull off. Once you have the ring "glued, as I put it" you just snap on the grip. It works rather well.

Ohsnap seems reluctant to come out with a similar solution. They said they don’t see getting away from sticking the metal ring permanently to your device or case. For me, I am not going to permanently stick a metal ring on my leather case. And I don’t want to always use the grip. Maybe I'll attach the wallet at times, etc. I really think they're making a big mistake. Imagine how many people would buy their grip if it was made for MagSafe.

Anyways, I love my solution.

Ok guys. I've found the perfect solution.

I have purchased a self adhesive 65mm round magnetic steel.

I have attached the Ohsnap ring to it and then I have covered the remaining portion of the 3M adhesive with a transparent film.

The final result is exactly what DARRINS has achieved (thanks for the idea !) but it's is much cheaper and probably stronger. The oshanp stays in place even upside down and stil you can easily remove it from you iPhone/case!!.

Ok, so I had to try your solution. I ordered the same plates from Amazon and have some extra Ohsnap metal rings. I did the exact same thing as you did, except I had a perfectly sized round white Beats sticker that fit in the center. Only thing is the US site of Amazon only had 70mm diameter. So there is a slight excess around the sides. It does work well, except the MagSafe charger puck actually holds more firmly and perfectly positions itself. But this does work. It is cheaper and slimmer. I have 3 grips so I am for now using the MagSafe puck grip on my Ohsnap stand and have this new version on my 12 Pro.

You could technically stick ANYTHING onto one of these and turn it into a MagSafe accessory... I’m intrigued

Also, how thick is the ohsnap metal ring? Do you think it could fit between the phone and the silicone case? That way you could swap the grip out for a wallet

I don’t think it would work inside the case. It needs direct contact.

But, the MagSafe puck on the charger is (from what I can tell) a combination of magnets and metal. The metal 3M plate deleyCon magnetic mount does attach to the Apple cases but not firmly enough for me. It also doesn't position itself perfectly either. And it slides around. The MagSafe puck from the charger is perfect except too expensive and is a little thick. I don’t think we'll find a real solution unless someone makes an adapter. There must be a unique combo of magnets and metal required to get perfect alignment and hold.

I think I'm just gonna wait until Popsockets releases their MagSafe accessories instead of wasting time / money with this DIY stuff

i found the almost perfect solution. i much prefer these ohsnap! grips over popsockets or finger rings. slimmer, easier to use and way more stable as a stand. i want to use magsafe and don’t want to permanently stick a steel ring on my 12 Pro.

on Amazon i found this magsafe base. it is thin and attaches via magsafe with about the same magnetic strength as the Apple charging puck. maybe slightly stronger. but when i stuck a new ohsnap! steel ring onto the metal base and placed the grip on it, really thin and low profile, it really snaps on strongly to my magsafe case. so much so that i can pull on the grip really hard and it detaches from the steel ring and the magsafe base stays attached to my iPhone. works just like as if i stick the steel ring permanently to my case. but i can push on the side and remove the whole thing to say attach my wallet or any other magsafe accessory. i say almost perfect only because the steel ring is slightly larger than the base, but only barely. it took a couple of attempts to center.

here’s the link to the magsafe base: (i got a black one, seems like they only have silver right now) https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B08QZFTWYR/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1

here’s some pics of the base:

maybe tomorrow i’ll post a video of the great hold and pics of the grip on my iPhone, if there’s any interest.

**ohsnap!: if you see this, again i think you should make and sell a base similar to this with an integrated steel ring. the hold is strong and you’ll sell a lot more grips. i am sure i’m not the only one who doesn’t want to permanently stick a steel ring on my phone but love your grips!

This is awesome! I just ordered one.

Quick Question though, I have a magsafe clear case so i'm wondering; with the Magsafe Base, steel Ring, and Ohsnap! grip attached, will the snapcharge work? if not, i'm returning the snapcharge and shelling out for the magsafe puck lol. I assume that the magsafe puck would work with only this base and steel ring attached right? not that it matters since i could always remove the base too.

I don’t think the snap charge will work but I haven't tried it. But with the added base, I can’t imagine it working. But the setup is great. It is super secure. The hold is strong. But when I want to use my Belkin 3 in 1 or a MagSafe battery or charger, I just remove the grip and have my case free from anything.

So, this is my first ever post on Macrumors! DarrinS, your McGuivering of the OhSnap grip into something useful was incredible to watch. At first, I thought you were apart of their marketing team... So I was suspicious at first, but as I read on your pure intentions became clear.

So, where am I now? I have now purchased 2x of the Magsafe Base (the ones you linked,) one standard ring grip, and my OhSnap Luxe is coming tomorrow.

Currently, I have been testing the functionality of the Magsafe Base on my Iphone 12 Pro, both through my current case and without.

Without the case (my unadulterated thoughts): "Holy $h!t, it actually works!" The grip holds, and I feel secure with my phone not flying out of my hands. The Magsafe Base holds firm and does not deviate.

With the case (Element Special Ops): The magsafe base still attaches... but it's INCREDIBLY wimpy. It can work as a kickstand, but any more force on it from any direction and the puck just comes off.

This brings me to my question for the good folks on this thread: What cases are people using successfully with this hack? And more specifically, how thin of a case are people using while successfully seeing true magnetic grip results?

It's clear that I need to change cases to accommodate this grip, so I just was wondering if this awesome thread had any more wisdom to offer. :)

I think any case that has built in MagSafe magnets will work just like on a naked iPhone. (Please don’t judge me) I have Apple's leather and silicone cases, a Vaja Grip case with MagSafe, a Pitaka Pro 2 MagSafe case and the base is rock solid on all. You just need a case with MagSafe.

That is... certainly a lot of cases! Wow! (No judgement!)

Also, dude. I think you may have helped me find my new case: Pikata Pro 2 - this one right? It looks sooo much like my original element case for Iphone 4s! I'll have to go dig into the drop protection now. It looks great, and seems to have the right corners. What are your thoughts on it? (Sorry for digressing the chat.)

Your Pitaka Pro 2 holds well with the Magback? Because I was just watching some review videos where they picked up from the cable of magsafe and it was (sorta) holding on. However, after a quick jiggle it fell off.

However, the Apple branded cases seem to work the best in terms of holding magnetic grip... Hmm...

that's the case. I like it. feels really good and I like the look of it. the base attaches nicely. I'm a little anal and am afraid to scratch my phone so I have never tried to attach the base to my naked 12 pm. but if it isn't strong enough for you, its really easy to return to Amazon.

Old post but since then the ohsnap 2.0 can now wirelessly charge while attached with no issue. I still love the idea of not needing to permanently attach a ring to the phone with this plate but don't like how it disables wireless charging.

I wish they would make a version with a hole in the middle.

the OhSnap grip 2.0 will attach to a MagSafe case or the phone directly without any metal ring. i have a couple of them and still prefer them over popsockets or rings. if you attach the metal ring that comes with the grip (again not a necessity with a MagSafe case or phone), the hold is much more secure and strong. you just slide the grip right off when you want to wirelessly charge your phone. it is not a permanent affixed thing.

Interesting that they do not mention that the ring is not absolutely necessary if you have a magsafe case.

i admit, with their ring installed the grip is much more secure. but without their ring it still does attach to my case. i have 2 phones, a 13pm with a peak design mobile case which is MagSafe and a pixel 6 pro. on the pixel 6 pro case i have a case from mous and i attached the metal ring. i can use the grip on both phones. the hold is much more secure on the p6p.

Could this be stuck directly to the bottom of the ohsnap and magnetize the oh snap for magsafe cases and or naked phones? Why does the ring need to go in between?

imo the grip 2.0 on its own will provide the same connection as this amazon ring you link. magsafe is not super strong. their ring has way stronger magnets so when glued to your case, the grip holds firmly.

For my preference I really don’t won’t to have to semi permanently stick anything to my phone case but I agree the 2.0 will probably to the same thing

I may just save myself time and hassle and bite the bullet and buy a magbak case since what I really want is something that works with MagSafe accessories, is wireless charging compatible, and can stick to metallic surfaces when I’m working out.

Ok ended up buying a magbak case. The most I've ever spent on a case but hey it's my bday.

It does essentially what I bought it for but also slightly underwhelmed. The rubber is a little soapy feeling and doesn't I"m seeing it slide a bit on certain metallic surfaces. Sticks great on the fridge.

Not sure it's worth the price but also haven't seen anything else out these that does this in such a clean and minimal way.

another truly MagSafe option I found is this EWA Phone Grip. I have been using it for over a week and really like it. It works well as a finger grip and as a stand. It's better than the Ohsnap 2.0 because it is MagSafe compatible and holds firmly.

DOes it make it so you can mount your phone to metallic surfaces like a ohsnap setup?
