Using T-Mobile USA on my 2G iPhone. Is it ok to install 3.0 and still be unlocked? (I heard the unlock is only affected on the 3G iPhone with 3.0)

    Thanks

downgrade back to 2.2.1 unless you could only do that during betas.

I was able to go from 2.2.1 Unlocked on an iPhone 2G to 3.0 GM Unlocked on the same phone, but could not get past the activation screen, I could receive calls and sms and I could dial numbers from the emergency dial pad, but no access to home screen or contact list... oh well time to wait

I´m pretty sure it will work if you do it through the update funktion ... As it was before with previous phones ...
I´ve never been apple to put original firmware on my phone with a restore
(option+restore+select firmware) without breaking the unlock...
When you hit the update button on the 17th everything should be fine (until you have to restore for some reason but until the I´m confident the dev team
    wil come to our rescue)

I (successfully) took the plunge on my 2G last night.:)

I started with unlocked and jailbroken 2.2.1. I then held option and clicked CHECK FOR UPDATES. This then allows you to navigate to the 3.0 file. After much reading it sounds like if you select restore, you'll end up with activation problems. Note that I'm not with a US service provider.

So far everything seems good. Obviously you will lose any jailbreak apps. Good luck!

BTW I used iTunes 8.2.0 public release to do this.

    need more info please.

so far, one has had success, while the other one locked.

from my understanding, you need to go through the update feature i suppose?

    Hi all,

I can guarantee that updating an iPhone 2g to 3.0 GM retains the unlock status as long as UPDATE is used on iTunes 8.2.0. Here is my proof, for those who may still have their worries:

My iPhone is not an official O2 one. I purchased it in the States a couple of years ago locked to AT&T when unsubsidised iPhones could still be purchased without a contract.

    Thats really odd ....
I have a UK 02 contract sim phone which is unlocked / jailbroken which I use in sweden with a Telenor sim.

I tried to update, with itunes 8.2 but the 3.0 software locked me out saying the sim was a non official sim and I needed to use an official sim.

I then had to find an older restore file and download to iTunes 8.1.1

I want to add, I have read of many other 2G phones becoming sim locked after the 3.0 update.... so i am really stumped how yours worked.

I disconnected my internet connection for the upgrade - not sure if this made a difference.

I am using a Vodafone sim FYI.

ok people...i took the risk and it worked. So everyone needs to stop spreading false information. It is probably because you are using the wrong method.

the update does NOT change the baseband, so the unlock remains in tact. This is true for iphone 2g ONLY. DO NOT UPDATE YOUR IPHONE 3G AS IT WILL BREAK THE LOCK.

download the ispw gold master file (this is up to you to get) and if you are on:

windows: restore your iphone with this new firmware. Put in DFU mode if need be.

mac: simply update to the new ispw (option+ click "check for updates").

I listened to you and I am screwed now

I am using t-mobile prepaid card and I don't have an ATT sim card around. iTune 8.2 doesn't like my sim card after the 3.0GM update. I also cannot downgrade. It gave me error when I am trying to restore with the custom firmware that I used to be using.

    Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

You need to downgrade in iTunes 8.1.1 rather than 8.2 and it'll be fine. You're not stuck.

i did not need to downgrade. It was as simple as chosing "update" and selecting the 3.0 firmware.

The problem is I cannot find a copy of iTune 8.1.1 for windows

    So my problem is
    I upgraded From
Unlocked iPhone 2.2.1 using T-mobile togo sim card (with custom firmwares)

Update with iTune 8.2 to 3.0GM firmware

    Result:
Phone is in emergency mode, you'll only see the dial pad
iTune will complain about your phone without a recognized sim card
Phone will not operate as a normal iPod Touch without a sim card.

It's safe.... I did it with no problems. Do Alt/Update (not restore).
The only issue is that I can't make YouTube or My Location to work
