I've got a new MacBook Pro and it doesn't have a Firewire port. Where does that leave me if I get the HV30? With USB 2.0?

just to be clear, do you have a MacBook or a MacBook Pro? The new macbooks do not have firewire, in which case the adapter brendanryder recommends won't do you any good. On the other hand, if you have the new MBP with one FW800 port that adapter will help.

I use one and it's great to have, but it feels a little loose. I would recommend getting a FW800>FW400 cable if you're going to popping it in and out much. It would be a bummer to knock it loose during a capture.

I've got the MBP. I didn't realize it had Firewire at all. Wasn't familiar with the new connection. Thanks for the suggestion on the use of the cable.

I wasn't thinking entirely clearly. If you're capturing direct from the HV30 You'll want a 9pin FW800 cable to 4pin cable, like this one (no specific recommendation, just an example).

One of the downsides to the new MBP is that it has only the one firewire port. Unfortunately, if you want to capture to an external drive (which I would recommend) you'll want to get a FW or esata card for the expressbus slot or get a FW hub.

Great camcorder. I bought mine late last year and have been shooting up the place. The video is sharp as a tack. Tape is no problem to capture as long as you use a 4 to 6 pin firewire cable 3 foot. 4 pin plugs into the back of camera and 6 pin into the 400 firewire on the back of your mac. You can get an adapter if all you have is 800 firewire. I purchased my firewire cable from eBay and it was $ 5.25 give or take a few cents. Excellent.

I edit in Final Cut Express and love it. Short learning curve. I bought Final Cut Express 4 by Tom Wolsky from Amazon. You might check Amazon out. You can see how people rate the books and read reviews about them. I was clueless as to what book to buy. Amazon really helped with that, plus pricing is pretty good.

Oh, I also bought the Canon wide angle lens. Wow is all I can say. As a commerical still shooter for 30 + years I have always, well almost always, shot with a wide angle lens. There is something about the deminsion and depth that lets me create a visual that seems to relate to how I see things. Just an idea.

All I can say overall is the HV30 is a great camera and works just great with a Mac.

Cheers and have fun.

Wow, this camera has blown me away. I'd not heard about this until I stumbled across this thread.

It seems to put the Sony A1E that I'm using to shame, which costs 3 times more!

Just to clarify, is it 1080p or 1080i?

What kind of machines are you guys editing with?

EDIT: What is your workflow with 25p footage in Final Cut Pro?

I would go to this site and find all the answers to your questions. This site has helped me a lot.
