I've had my MB for well over two years and in August it'll have it's third birthday it has been and is running continuously. The only time it's properly switched off is after software updates requiring restarts and thats only for a few minutes. Otherwise all I do is close the lid to put it to sleep and then open the lid to wake it up. Recently it has stalled twice on opening the lid to wake the machine requiring the press and hold the power button but that's it in terms of problems. I've had the usual niggles with application crashes and such like many others have had here but that was more to do so when SL was first installed and these have dramatically reduced in frequency.

I will admit I don't use screen savers, preferring to simple black-out the screen buy swiping the trackpad to a corner. (if this goes some way to increasing screen life I'm unsure of), There are better people on here to comment on this aspect than me. And when on battery power the screen is rarely above 60% brightness although it's only on battery for a few hours a month otherwise it's always plugged in, wether being used or in sleep mode.

NO! its not ok to leave your macbook on overnight

NO IT IS NOT OK TO LEAVE YOUR MACBOOK RUNNING OVERNIGHT!!! New or old, doesn't matter. you cant leave macbooks or macbook pros on overnight. Its ok once in a while but not constantly. You should power it down when not in use. Like if your going to work or something. Sleep mode is ok but not for long. Like a month TOPS. If you constantly leave it on and plugged in it will wear on the battery, screen and (if you have one) LED's in the keybord. These will wear out over time and leaving them on over night only quickens the process. The black lit screen will also wear out. Leaving it in sleep mode for a wicked long time will also slow it down. So use caution when leaving your macbook, pro, imac on over night. :apple::apple::apple:

Four year old thread???

Anyway, I've left my 2006 CD MacBook on all night every night since the day I got it. Sometimes I'll close the lid, sometimes I'll let it sleep on its own, very few times I've left it doing stuff all night and day, but it's still running great.

I did have to purchase a new battery for it about a year ago but I think there was a defect in these batteries so I'm not really going to count that.

wait..... i close the lid, it turns my screen off, yet the screen still gets wear on it? if that is the case (which it isn't) it's a panel defect, not caused by leaving the mb running, i belive it could have a affect on the battery, in the same way leaving my mbp plugged in all the time could, so i'm not to worried about that, and the led's (which turn off when you shut the lid) well yes, if there on it would, but the logic board in the mb is more likely to die before the led's, led's (virtually) never die (yes i know they do, but they have a very long life expectancy)

i have left every laptop i have ever had (both pc and mac) running 24/7, it's never damaged a single one of them.

and again..... a 4 year old thread.

I almost always leave my MBP on. I can't remember the last time I shut if off, except to restart for updates of course. I just close the lid and let it go to sleep. I really like that I can keep it running. The manufacturer of my old PC laptop recommended that I shut if down when not in use and it was a royal pain. I hated always turning it on and off and having to wait for it load it up before I can do anything. Not that it takes long I guess, I am just impatient lol.

You join the forum and your first and only post is to resurrect an ancient thread to post absolute nonsense! You obviously have no idea what you're talking about. Many, many users, including me, leave Macs running for many months at a time without shutting down. It will not harm it at all.

I also remember when I bought my iMac and MBP the sales associates at the Apple store told me its ok to leave it on and they recommend it. I am go to go with Apples word on this, since they you know built the product lol.

Not that they were wrong in this instance, but I've learned not to trust employe's word as absolute truth, especially when it could be easy to do some research. Just an example, I went to an Apple Store to purchase a Bumper for my iPhone 4S. I asked two girls if I would have any problems plugging in my car charger since the opening looked weird. They assured me I would have no problems.

My iPhone died on the way home.

I agree with you, you should never just blindly follow what someone else tells. However I weighed the options and had every confidence that this employee was knowledgable and chose to follow their advice. But on the whole I agree you should never just blindly follow someone.

Sorry if I came off a bit rude. Just upset that I have to either go naked (which I'd love to do, but it just feels weird in my hand) or look for a car charger that'll work with an Apple Bumper.

You didn't come off as rude, and you raised a valid point. Exactly what I would expect from such a large community, thanks for voicing your opinion when everyone chimes in it makes the conversation so much better.

typically, it is fine, but make sure that the screen if off and the heat release is not covered up by blankets or anything soft (to stop it from overheating)

cheers,
rohan

Sleep mode is basically off. I believe only the RAM is being powered. I guess I leave my macbook on for about 8 hours a day at work, then put it to sleep the rest of the time. I probably leave it like this most of the time and only do a full shutdown once a week.

But for a macbook, you shouldn't leave it running all day all night in regular on mode. Even if you don't care about the battery wear, which is quite slow, the hard disk has a limited lifetime and heat will lower the lifetime. Then again, if you backup data regularly and don't care to replace a hard disk every two years, then by all means, you can keep your macbook on all the time.

If it's plugged in overnight, it won't have any effect on the battery. The hard drive wear will not make a measurable difference in the drive's life. Likewise, the heat from leaving it on won't have a measurable impact on drive life.
