Old email address won't go away

I have long since stopped using the email address I used when I signed up for iTunes, which was also the email address I used to create my Apple ID. I now use a different gmail address both as my primary Apple ID and iTunes account, and the old email address has long since been deleted from both my iTunes account and my Apple ID.

My problem is that the old email address keeps popping up. Every time I set up a new iPad or iPhone it always pops up asking for a password. I just hit "skip" and go about my business, but it's beyond annoying to always have that pop up when I'm to input my Apple ID on a new device.

Any idea how to get rid of an old email for good?

Do you have any content with DRM (app or video) on the device that was purchased and downloaded from the iTunes store before you changed the address ? If yes, the old address may still be embedded in that item, and is therefore displayed when the device asks for your authorization. If you re-download the item it should have the new address embedded.

Very interesting comment! I almost certainly do. I've got a brand-spanking-new ipad Air 2 with 64 gb with room to just basically download everything ever purchased with my account. I'll give that a try.

If you have the content in iTunes, you can see the Apple ID it was downloaded with under Get Info/File/Purchased by (in iTunes 12).

So, that's definitely correct. I go into iTunes and pick a song I purchased years ago, and under get info it says "purchased by" and shows my old email address.

If I delete it (locally but not from icloud) and then redownload it, it says "purchased by" and has my new apple id email address.

I'll have to try that with all of my historical purchases and then see if it then finally stops asking me for the old email address.

Will report back but it may be a few days.

It shouldn't matter for music unless it's a *really* old purchase, since they haven't used DRM for music for a number of years now. ;) It's more likely an app or a video.

Same thing happens for the few old tv shows I have on there. I'll try deleting and re-downloading those as well and all the old apps, and see if I can restore my iPad without my old email address popping up a bunch of times.

So here's the final outcome. I deleted from all my devices all apps, TV shows, etc. that were purchased under my old email address, and then re-downloaded them from iCloud. When I click "get info", under "purchased by" they all now say my new email address (i.e., current Apple ID).

To test it out I erased and restored my iPad. When restoring it no longer gives me pop-ups with my old Apple ID email address, so I think it's safe to say I've successfully purged that from my system. Thanks for the tips.
