I just got my MBA today and I have an existing external HDD which contains my music, image and video files I backed up from my old Windows laptop. Im a Mac noob so can I use the drive as I would on Windows or do I have to do formatting to the drive before I can use it.

You can read from it but most likely not write / delete until you format it exFAT.
