Old iPhone 3G as an iPod Touch

Essentially I want to take my old iPhone 3G and turn it into an iPod touch like device for my son by disabling the phone features. Is there any drawbacks to this? Anyone done this an wished they would have just purchased a new touch instead.

One of my friends does this. It's fatter and weighs more, but it works just fine. It's also crippled compared to newer iPod touches.
