iPod Old iPod as external hard drive?

Would it be possible to use an older 20 GB iPod to back up my computer? If so, what software would I need or steps would I need to take.

If its not possible, I'll just use it as a good external hard drive to keep individual files.

just use disk utility (applications/utilities) to format it as mac os extended & journaled.
