I should have thought of setting the date too. I bought an early 2011 13" Pro that had a dead battery. Once I corrected the date in terminal, everything installed properly.

It worked. Laptop is working perfectly.

However, I believe yours is 2 GB RAM with HD right? If so, the performance can't be great. But then again, with 2 GB RAM and HD, performance is not good on Yosemite 10.10.4 either.
With 4 GB and HD these machines are tolerable but slow.
With 4 GB and SSD it flies (relatively speaking), but you can't do a lot of multitasking.
With 8 GB and SSD it flies (relatively speaking), even with multitasking. I could use one of these as a primary laptop.
Whomever you are giving this to is going to be very pleased, at least once they get an SSD in there.
