A question on 2012 MBA: has anyone tried alternative power bricks on them? They are selling much lighter power bricks nowadays and a USB-C to magsafe cables - so I am contemplating a purchase just to minimize weight and save the number of power brix i carry on travel.

I would NEVER use any other power supply with any MacBook other than the Apple one that came with it, or Apple replacement!.. You chance frying it!

Apple's charger isn't any special. In fact, it's not even a real charger as the entire logic is inside the computer itself. It's basically nothing more than an AC adapter, and you can use pretty much any AC adapter you want as long as it meets the specifications. Personally, I would stay away from cheap and unknown brands because in that case there is a chance of killing your MacBook Air but as long as you stick with well-known reliable brands you'll be fine.
