Multiple devices? Maybe a laptop that doesn't stay "on" at all times but gets fired up when needed up to days later? I've noticed that firing up an older device that has been off seems to quickly "catch up" on text messages even if the thread has since been deleted. And that would be "new notifications" to that device which may show universally on other devices where the message has already been seen and processed?
There's also just a scheduling concept. Message arrives but notification processing may sometimes lag... particularly if you and your devices sleep... but then pop the next morning.
And then, also, as guessed, Apple OSes are not exactly "just works," bug-free anymore. If this, best hope is still probably 3 or 4 point updates out... as a generation tends to get much better at about .5 or .6 or about WWDC time. I cling to Sonoma myself, until at least about .5. And same on iDevices: one generation behind, last point update of that prior generation. Those who jump in ASAP get to play with new goodies first but also get to be the bug finders & endurers. Once you are playing with about .6-.8 version of this generation, perhaps cling to it until the next gen is out at .5 or so (approximately WWDC time).
