iPod touch older ipod touch, which IOS version to jailbreak?

a friend just gave my kids an old ipod touch. I think its a 32gb 3rd gen.

What is the best firmware to put on and jailbreak?

I'm not familiar with jailbreaking ipods as i've only done it with iphones. does the ipod require SHSH blobs to restore?

Update it to 5.0.1 then jailbreak it. Yes it needs it to restore. It's the same process for iPhone or iPod.

Thanks for the reply. It's at 5.1 right now. I guess it's tethered only right?

Yep, unless you have the SHSH Blobs.
