They are ALL faulty. It is a problem with the heat cycles that weakens and cracks the solder joints in the GPU. I just don't see why they change the solder... Anyway, yes Apple will cover it for 2 years unless you buy Apple Care which it will be 3 years. But that isn't any use since when they replace it, another bad one is put in meaning it will die as well. It's just a vicious circle because Nvidia want to cover their own butts!

Maybe you have a genuine faulty machine? Graphics artefacts can be cause by a number of things, faulty cabling could do it too!

Mine is a 2.2Ghz SR from 2007, has 128MB if Vid RAM and it's still working just fine! It's over 16months old, I use it every single day, tems go right up to 100°C, it's on near enough 24/7, doing demanding chores from Apple's FCPS2 and you know? Until the day my machine fails, I'll take the faulty nVidia rumour to be just that! An over hyped rumour.

:D

I also have a 2.2ghz MBP, 8 months old, use it all day, every day. Works great, although I do tend to keep the temps as low as possible generally. I'm not all that worried about the 8600M GT, since my screen is just fine and I haven't even had a single glitch yet. Everything wears out eventually, and when that time comes I'll buy something new(er.)

Nope, no known issues. I just picked up a 2.16 17" on eBay today :) I am going to MAX that one out with a 320gb 7200rpm drive and 4gb of ram (although it may only access 3gb of it, who cares). I doubt the model will be significantly slower than the current top of the line 17" and its under half the price :)

2.16, 17". That means the first rev. First rev couldn't handle 4GB. Only 2GB. 2nd Rev 17" is 2.33, and that could handle about 3.3GB.

amazon pricing

amazon just dropped pricing a bit more, I think I'll go with them.

i have had mine for a few weeks and it is fine. No problems at all. I bought the high end 15". The 17" is still current and will be for another few months. I paid $1600 for mine, and paid $50 for the Corsair ram at Frys. I will upgrade the HD when they come out with a larger 2.5" HD. I dont feel like paying $100 for an extra 70GB for a 7200rpm. Mine is only a 250GB 5400RPM drive. On the clearance section on apples' site, you cannot "upgrade" the computers...ie; harddrive's or whatnot.

I use mine for web design and everything else.

That's the "problem." You'll need to turn the MBP off and on often to be able to "see" that failure. You're running it almost 24/7 without turning off your MBP, so you'll not experience as much temp fluctuations as people who run what you do but turn off their MBP when not in use.

Get at least the 2.5GHz one for the 6MB cache.

The difference between 2.5 and 2.6 used to be about $200+, so my recommendation at that time used to be that the 2.6 wasn't worth the extra money. In this case though, eh, I'd spend the extra $100.

Like earlier posters said though, the biggest difference is between the 2.4 and the 2.5. Definitely get at least the 2.5. It should be plenty fast. I love mine :).

thanks all

thanks all for the input.

I wasn't really able to find any clear spec comparissons, and of course was drawn once again to the new MBP. But, after spending 30 minutes with the new one at a BB yesterday, I decided I just couldn't deal with the GLASSY screen.

I was able to get AMZN down to 1550$ AR, (I'm very comfortable buying there and their rebates) and figured the FAR Fusion or parallels with MM or MC, wasn't worth buying with their return policies, or having to do so MANY rebates to get the money back.

I went ahead and bit the little pop (ended up being on 100$ more) for the 2.5 512MB 250GB version, I figure it was worth it at that point. Sure wish it came with 1 STICK of RAM.

Here's hoping I don't get stung by the GPU bug, the yellow tinge, the squeak and pop issue or other.

thanks again.

I got the same machine from MacMall a couple of weeks ago. I love it.

After looking at barefeats comparisons, for the price I think it was the best choice. :D

oh

Oh and one other thing. I think the price will go LOWER in the next few weeks and I really like the 30 day price policy that AMZN has, so if for BF or other apple promos the price drops AGAIN, I'll net the difference. I wasn't too sure how the other truly quality vendors would handle that.
