Older MacBook Pro won't boot

My MacBook Pro won't boot after latest software upgrade. Black screen. Hard drive starts and then stops. Genius said the motherboard was most likely the problem.

I am inlined to agree with the genius. But, wanted to see if anyoneight have an idea. Looks like a new iMac is in my future.

Check the RAM or take out the hard drive and see what it does when you try to boot it up if you could.

Sorry, need more details:

-model of MBP
-what software update?
-can it boot from external HD? did the Genius try that?
-what did the Genius try?
-etc...
