Older MBP doesn't like newer DVD media

C2D 2.26GHz 13" MBP running 10.6.8

Optical drive is:

HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS23N

Trying to burn a DVD.

Ran out of older media, but the drive won't recognize the newer stuff I have on hand. Not the T-Y 16x DVD-R.

Or the Sony 16x DVD-R, or Verbatim 2.4 DVD+R dual-layer.

Recognizes commercial media fine, as well as the DVDs I burned on older media.

Any single-layer recommendations appreciated - do I just have to drop back to lower-speed media?
