Hi! I am thinking of getting the iPhone 12 but I heard that OLED displays degrade and have significant shorter lifespan than LCD.

I have an iphone 5 and 6, fully working, being almost 7 years old now. Even if I dont plan to use my phone for 10 years, I still think its nice to see that they are perfectly alive and they could very well serve as backup phones. I have to say that I think the OLED display looks great, but I also value longevity.

Now I'm thinking, would it be possible at least theoretical, for an OLED iPhone to survive that long, or will the screen (pixels) die long before that?
If so, maybe the iPhone 11 is a better deal since it has LCD?

I think it’s best to get Apple care if you’re planning to keep the phone that long. You’ll be worry free.

Applecare lasts 2 years only and then you have the option to pay monthly after that but that’s not practical financially. The best way to track longevity is to start with the iphone x and see if any launch day owners have had any issues so far since it’s been 3 years now

Oh, I didn't think iPhone X had OLED display, thank you!

I think the way most people use smartphones means you should be able to get 10 years of use out of them. That is, unless you’re someone who spends 10 hours a day glued to your phone screen.

I have a 5 year old OLED tv with close to 10,000 hours on it, and still working fine. I have a 4 year old OLED with over 3,000 hours on it, working just fine too. At 10,000 hours over 5 years, you would have to have your screen on 5 hours a day. I doubt you even come close to that, and even if you did, my 5 year old tv continues to work just fine, and so will your phone. Don't worry about it.

To put it another way I have never seen a single report of major OLED screen degradation over time. Lots of posts worrying about it, but no reports of failures. Burn-in is the only thing I've seen documented, but that is easily avoidable.

It must be a long time ago since you heard that OLED has "significant" lower lifespan than LCD.

I'm actually surprised that no website seems to be measuring old iPhone X displays, to test the degradation. Would be interesting to see, how bright and color accurate they still are.
But i guess they don't care about the old, since they always get the new shiny toys ;)

Yes that would be interesting!
I still have and use my iphone 6 with 85% battery life left even though my main phone is now the iphone 12.

Apple waiting quite a long time before utilising OLED in their phones. They wouldn’t put it in unless it had a decent lifespan
