I'll take touchid over faceid anyday lol.
Serious question -- do you live in a warm-ish area? I live in the northeast US, and once the cold weather comes (like now), my fingers get all chapped and the touch ID is useless. I usually have to re-teach the touch ID about 4-5 times per year as the weather goes through various changes!

I don't hate this timeframe. It will make my mini 7 purchase feel worthwhile before the new one comes out. I usually skip a model, but this one hopefully will be good enough to not skip!

I'm with you on your use case but would like to ask for both options. There are times in the bright warm sunlight that is the south that you have to be creative to get face-id to work. Touch-ID is nice in those times. If I had both and it could not see me, it would say touch the button. They could do it on iPhone too. I'm not a tech but I bet the chip that controls the access could manage two inputs. There are times I wish my mini had face-id so I can get behind that option just as well as the Touch ID I have now.

Isn’t iPhone 17 Pro Max an Oled iPad already?

This iPad lost relevance about when Apple started making phablet phones. Considering they never put actual flagship processors inside, I don’t quite understand what’s the point of it
I literally have the iPad mini 7 and the iPhone 17 Pro Max in front of me right now. They are not even remotely the same size. And unless you hack the iPhone 17 Pro Max, you don't get all the extra functionality (like split screen) that you have on the iPad mini 7. I have written chapters of a novel on my iPad mini 7 while referencing notes in split screen. I can't do that comfortably (writing) or at all (split screen) on the 17 Pro Max. They are not the same.

I think you'd find that many people disagree with you, including myself. I've owned plus/max sized iPhones and iPad Minis at the same time, and while the difference in screen size may sound small on paper, the wider aspect ratio on the iPad and access to actual tablet apps really differentiates the two types of devices. I've found firsthand that a big phone and a small tablet are not necessarily interchangeable.

Personally, the number 1 upgrade I'm hoping for the next iPad Mini is another RAM increase. On my iPad Mini 7 and as new releases of iPadOS came out, I've seen more and more frequent background Safari tabs and apps getting killed where they often lose their last state and get force reloaded. At least for me, it has been a very annoying experience.

I also hope future iPadOS versions put more focus on more efficient RAM management.

Just personal preference, but I've always preferred TouchID over FaceID. Both have always been effective for me, with no need to re-teach. I live in Canada.

Aw man I will absolutely have forgotten I was planning on buying one by then… I was hoping it would make a good on-the-go notebook and book, but that’s basically a year out

Best of both worlds! I like it. Which is why it will never happen. 🙂

It’s basically double the screen size as a iPhone pro max. Completely different size and not even remotely close. This why people are asking for a folding iPhone, double the screen size.

The mini needs to be completely rethought. Hope they take take their time and return with a complete do-over for th next version. As it stands now it is the biggest let down of all the iPads by a long shot. The one device that fee like it was shipped with the least amount of care, thought or effort. The mini form factor can be so much more than a lazy afterthought.

It's frustrating how Apple insists on skimping on RAM for every device for exactly this reason. iOS 26 is downright horrible on the Mini 6.

I have zero issues with Touch ID whether it's cold or hot weather.

For me, this product is no longer relevant with the incoming iFold which the marriage between iPhone and iPad mini. With the iFold, only one device needed to get iPhone and iPad forms. iFold will be an extra portable device functioning as an iPhone and iPad mini.
This is why they are upgrading it.
Probably no pencil input on the phone and the mini will be a better experience to hold, read etc I imagine.

I will wait until the fold is out to make a decision on this mini.

Edge case: I just need a M processor to enable extended display and use the mini as my main computer. 😭

If it gets pro motion and an a19 pro is it a handheld mobile gaming contender? I think it could be with neural accelerators and if Apple optimization out of the games using metal 4

These bezels though, no comparison. Phone uses maximum space of the chassis for the screen

Try Curel extreme dry hand relief. Helps me with a similar issue! Good luck.

I don’t know what it is about the iPad mini because I certainly don’t need one but I'm just so attracted to them. If this next model comes in a starlight colour, I'll probably melt over it. I have a purple gen 6 and really considered getting the 7 in starlight. I only held off because it seemed very likely the next model would have the better screen myself and everyone else wants.

Likewise, I love my mini and I’m not entirely sure why I do so much!
