It always baffled me as to why people spend so much time and money "protecting" a phone. These devices are a lot more durable than you think. I have dropped my 5S twice and it was recently ejected from the seat during a car accident. Not a scratch.

Too beautiful to cover and too thin to bulk it up. Unwrap it, use it and enjoy it! If you're like me, you will have a new one in a year anyway. :)

You are just lucky. Hopefully not three strikes and you're out.

+1 Totally agree. Screen protectors are the most ridiculous thing.

I use a Power Support anti-glare screen protector for one reason - it greatly reduces the fingerprints and smudges and makes it much easier to clean. It's also nice to have a fresh oleophobic coating for less than $10.

I've used several iPhones with no screen protection and they held up fine. There will be minuscule scratches that can be seen under certain lighting/angles but if you're careful (not storing in pocket with keys, change, etc) you don't have to worry about anything visible showing up.

+1. I've used PowerSupport for the last 2 years or so. Great protectors. I had 1 screen protector that I reinstalled 6 times before I replaced it.

Has anyone ever had the oleophobic coating wear off an iphone 5 or 5S , my 5S is 3 months old and I don't use screen protectors cuz they ruin the feel of the phone . I'm just wondering how long till it starts to come off and what happens when it does ?

Just relax and enjoy your phone. You should not wear off this coating and if you did you would not notice. Just use a microfiber cloth and do not worry about it.

We'll mine would have to be strike 7 had all gens and never a case or screen protector.

And on topic, since the 3GS I've never seen the oleophobic coating wear off.
Also it is not intended to protect against fingerprints it simply makes them easier to wipe off.

I can't understand the thread ... The oleophobic coating has nothing to do with screen functionality. Once it wears off, the screen would be as bright and responsive as before. I just could take some more smudges.

Because I like to resell them on eBay for more money without the coating wearing off.

1 - I have had every iPhone except Gen 1. Never have I ever experienced the "coating" coming off. Ever. Never have I experienced a change in how the screen felt, looked or worked. Nor have I ever had a case or screen protector on my device.

2 - I have resold all my iPhones and gotten more than what I have paid for them because they were always in like new condition.

3 - Are you serious???

Yes I'm serious. I live on the beach. Sand does wonders to your screen and aluminum body. Not everyone lives in the same elements.

Sand does wonders to any metal/glass object. No coating available would stand up to it, at least nothing on the consumer level.

If you live on the beach the coating is the last of your problem: install a screen protector immediately because sand could cause severe damage to any device.

Oh def. that's the first thing that happens to my phones. I'm actually using one of the tempered glass protectors and they are incredible. Ultra hard to scratch and it looks like nothing is on your screen.

Also I use a Mophie Juicepack which is great for protecting the speaker and USB port from everyday dirt. I do need to find better fix than a pencil eraser for the headphone hole since I use wireless headphones

I'd say I'm covered decently.

You'd be amazed at how much sand can get blown into your pockets just living on the beach and not even walking on the sand.

Don't use any harsh chemicals to wash your phone and you should be fine. What I mean is, don't use rubbing alcohol, goo-gone, acetone, amonia, windex, bleach, soap, invisi-glass, etc. Those will do more damage to the coating than any sort of day to day use would.

If you must wash your screen, put a few drops of plain water on a cloth, and use that. This will do the trick 99% of the time.

If you must disinfect the screen of your phone, use at most 1 tiny drop of dawn soap diluted in a 16oz cup of water, mix it up, and dip a cloth into that. But don't do this often.

Well said!

To which I'll add my experience with Oleophobic coating.

It's more durable than the finish on the phone itself.

I use 91% alcohol, but then I have a mophie case and screen protector.

I've used eyeglass wipes and cleaners and most of them contain isopropyl and it has caused no issues. I figure if its good enough for coated eyeglass lenses its good enough for my iPhone.
Nothing miraculous in the oleophobic coating going on.
