If freedom of speech were a factor on here, it would be illegal for moderators and admin staff to edit, delete, and moderate posts.

Remember that context can be taken out of proportion quite easily on anything typed or written. If the intent is to share information, great! But this is starting to look like the beginnings of a Bar brawl, by the onslaught of personal attacks.

Back on Topic (slightly)

I am sure my company will be ordering servers with Dual core shortly after the are released, to test for customers. I should have a week of play time with a dual core system all to myself, if we order enough for the lab.

Granted, they are still new, but does anyone know how long Solaris takes to get ported for new hardware? I just started working with that OS last fall, and I am not sure how quickly they adopt new technology. I remember reading a report on Cnet that Sun adopted the Opteron single core relatively quickly, Has anyone gotten word on any beta programs for these new fangled Dual core gadgets ?

Sun didn't have to do much work to support the Opteron quickly because they have maintained and shipped Solaris on X86 since the Solaris 2.5 days.

And IBM can't be far behind, they have after all manufactured dual core Power 5 processors for some time, so Apple has less to fear than Intel & co in my opinion considering that Intels current dual core option can not be used in a dual processor configuration and the server version that can will not be ready until 2006, according to the roadmap.

IBM has been shipping dual core CPU's since 2001. They introduced their first dual core as the Power4.
That being said it isn't a matter of the capability of a company to manufacture dual cores, essentially both intel and AMD could have been making dual cores for years too. The reason they haven't was because it didn't make sense for their market segments.
Also dual cores usually suffer in clock speed. For example the Power 4 and Power 5 CPUs have both been under 2GHz. The Power 4+ finally reached 1.7GHz.
To make dual core PPC970 family CPUs requires a completely different FAB line/process. These take time to design and build.
The FABs are in production now and Sampling has already occurred. The question is whether they have been producing enough CPUs to meet sufficient supply for Apple to release a dual-core upgrade.
Personally If I was Apple I would release the dual-cores in the Xserve first.

Thanks for the information. I mostly work with Solaris on Ultra Sparc servers, but I would like to do an Opteron install when we get the first of the Dual core systems.

The dual cores are nice and all, but I'm sure Apple will survive if they release G5s with the single core GX, instead of the MPs. I hope for the fastest for my money, but I'd rather have a PowerMac for $2000 than $5000 (those high end CPUs are expensive!). Maybe they'll have a top end, $3500 model, and the rest get price drops. People will bitch anyway. :p

This is a private forum, and the moderators moderate at their discretion. This isn't the government supressing your rights here, which is what free speech is designed for. I've had posts deleted, it not a big deal. If you don't like it, you don't have to come here, that's just the way it is.

Pick your battles people (unless that was your point, in which case, I agree).

I understand that point, I am a moderator / admin on other sites, I was more or less trying to get the same point across as you were. Someone brought up that they had freedom of speech on here, I was trying to clairify that it was incorrect to think that on this forum.
