Nope. Pixel HDR only controls highlights. It crushes the shadows into blackness...and it does not help that it is also high in contrast. So, regular photos often come out dark and dreary. Google HDR does NOT lift shadows at all...it does NOT do long exposure on every picture that it takes. Google only does long exposure on their Night Sight mode...and with that mode, it does extreme long exposure (4-6 seconds) along with AI to compensate for handshake.

Smart HDR does long exposure on every picture that it takes...thus able to lift shadows. Of course, the long exposure of Smart HDR is not nearly as long as Night Sight but it helps greatly in regular photos. And Smart HDR really brighten’s shadows if it detects person/face in picture.

Agreed, I have no idea why so called "experts" believe the Pixel 3 takes better pictures. It's simply adding more contrast to please the eye but you lose all shadow details. There are however, instances where the Pixel 3 does take sharper and better photos so it really is a toss up. This is great news for us iPhone owners though that Smart HDR has been a game changer. Love the competition!

I must have a defective camera because whenever I take photos with people in it, it always looks flat and washed out. Wish I had my phone on me so I could post some examples
