I've got an old iMac G3, Rev B I think, thats currently on OS 10.2.something . I gave it the upgrade too, so it has safari and all that jazz. Now, about that modern era stuff. I want to know if we can hack TenFourFox or InterWebPPC to run on earlier versions, and if we can't, how can we get the internet on one. How do we do this? Or could we make a 10.2 compatible browser?

But... any reason you're not upgrading to Tiger 10.4.11, which would give you IWPPC and TFF?
I don't know if you can install 10.4, even! How many disc's does it take to install? I don't have very many cds. Also opera mini? How does it handle on today's web?

You can install Tiger on any G3. You just have to work around its “Ugh, the machine doesn’t have FireWire” roadblock. Tiger comes on four CDs. This version has already been modified to work on any G3.

Opera Mini works by sending URLs to their servers and them returning a slimmed-down version. So how well it works depends on how well this technique works with a given site. In any case, this is the only “modern” browser that runs on 10.2.8 (it actually runs in a Java virtual machine). You’ll have much better luck with 10.4.11.

Or you can install it via USB as I did with my iMac G3. Admittedly slower than CDs but without the hassle of swapping discs and you can always while away the time concentrating on something else. :)

Spot on: why use earlier versions of OS X when Tiger is available and can be easily coaxed to run on unsupported G3s?

Classic and the original UI, mainly. But yeah, for web browsing it's either Tiger or Leopard, maybe Lubuntu 12...

Classic is available with Tiger, as you know but if you need to run older software then you might as well just do it using OS 9 directly on a G3 for better results. Out of all the pre-OS X games that I tried via Classic, the only one which actually ran well was Dark Forces.
