I've been using iPhoto for iOS' Journals since it first came out. Been very happy with it. Now that it's discontinued, I need a new way to share photos and text. We travel a lot and Journals was essentially a way of communicating with our friends via writing and images.

Criteria are:
Simple.
Text boxes that can handle more than a sound bite.
No specific app required at their end beyond a web browser.
iOS and OSX supported.

Already eliminated are Dropbox and the new Photos app. For me, both are a disaster. Being nice, too limited.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Does it have to be on Mac?

I saw a really good Journal app on iOS and it looked great. Think it was one of those editors choice things.

Not sure if this helps?

Thanks. I had already looked at Day One. On the distribution side, it's very social media centric. Too limited for our distribution pool as many either don't use social media, never check it anymore or have dropped out of it.

Nice app though.

Well, how do you plan to share? Day One publishes to its own webpage, and you can share that URL via email, etc, or on certain social sites. What it doesn't do is aggregate all your entries. More like one-off postcards than reading a journal. You can just email it from the apps (not on the desktop, unfortunately, but that's still pretty easy to do).

Thanks. We travel months at a time. It needs to be closer to a journal than a postcard.

I've done quite a bit of looking around this weekend. From what I've looked at, I don't see any minimal/focused approaches that satisfy me. So I'm now tossing around the thought of simply going back to my pre-iPhoto Journals era and doing my own website.

What about using a hosted website running Wordpress?

What about using a hosted website running Wordpress?

No doubt Wordpress would make my life easier. I have a very experienced Wordpress user as a friend and teacher. But it strikes me as so cluttered, photography and writing take a back seat.

It's still on the list. Thanks.

For anyone with similar needs.

I ended up going with a very simple solution. Apple's Mail stationary with a link to a jAlbum. Provides all I want. With a touch of html here and there, jAlbums provides a lot of flexibility.

I used to use some jAlbums on my old web site. I wasn't thinking when I started this search.

Your own site. Piece of cake using Wordpress. It has the tools for blogs and galleries. With your own site you also get your own email server. Hosting can be had for around $5 a month.
