I did some testing with the iOS photos app on my X and I am a bit confused. In Slomo and some other modes the camera definitely switches from the top to the bottom lens when i click on the 1x zoom button to make it 2x zoom. But when I am in the standard photo mode it doesn’t.

You can check which lens is actually being used by holding your finger on one of the lenses.

So, why is that the case?

The camera system will detect how much ambient light there is, and automatically choose the lens for optimal quality.

Because the telephoto lens has a smaller aperture, less light is allowed in. If there isn’t enough ambient light, the phone will resort to using the standard, wide angle lens and digital zoom instead.
