According to the smc fan control, one of the fans on my Macbook pro is out. Can this be fixed? The computer is already starting to seriously overheat as a result, even when running the other fan at full capacity.

Send it in to get the fan repaired or maybe even a logic board replaced.

    And

Further note: the fan has come on a few times and gone off again, doesn't seem to me dead completely.

Thanks, jjahshik32, but that's what we hope to avoid.

    replace it

I had to get my right fan replaced when it stopped spinning. Took it to the apple store, and a few hours later it was ready. I had apple care so I couldn't tell you how much it'd cost without it. Good luck.
