I love the new remote and think it was a good upgrade for Apple. However I have one issue with it. Sometimes there is lag when I use the volume up/down button. This is the only issue I have experienced so far. Does anyone else also experience this?

Try re-pairing the remote. I have had this happen in the past with the Siri Remote 1, and re-pairing the remote fixed it.

The new Siri Remote 2 doesn't work with a lot of apps, that could be a big issue for some.

If I get a new ATV, I will most likely try to find a cheap Siri Remote 1 to pair with it for this reason.

With the new Siri remote on my ATV 4K 2017 I notice that it doesn't work at all for a minute or more after running an update to the tvOS. I can't remember if the Siri 1 remote did that also. But with the new remote there appears to be a separate update that gets sent directly to it which comes after the ATV 4K box gets its update, so you have to wait for both to finnish before the remote starts working again. Since the remote likely has its own updates, it might be possible that Apple pushes these out without announcement from time to time. I've noticed a few times where my Siri 2 remote just quits working for a few minutes then starts working again. Or it could just be bugs. Hard to tell with Apple.

My biggest complaint about the new remote is the Siri button on the side which is easy to accidentally push. I solved that by putting it in a rubberized slip-on case that makes accidental activation less likely. I don't use Siri with my ATV 4K, so I wish we could simply turn off the button in the settings. Other than that, I hated the Siri 1 remote, still have it stashed away somewhere, and I think the Siri 2 remote is much better. However, I do wish it wasn't so sparse of usable buttons. Typical Apple minimalist BS where form wins out over function. Jony Ivy is long gone now, they need to start making things more functional again.

I have this issue as well but it’s more like 10 seconds and not a minute. I don’t have a issue with the Siri button.

AppleTV 4k (1st gen) with a Siri Remote. Swapped back to the original remote and the volume still lagged after I turn it on after it was off for a while.

It dawned on me a little too late but I fired up instruments on my Mac to see what it was doing. Keeping in mind I was just sitting on the home screen and the CPU was running full tilt (200-300%). There were a lot of processes running which is normal to see but A LOT of them were using moderate amounts of CPU so it added up.

After another minute the CPU settled down bouncing between 20-100% (mediaanalysisd doing its thing causing those spikes). At that point the volume wasn't lagging.

Unfortunately I dont feel I had enough time to form any sort of conclusion. However it did resemble a computer or smart device when you first turn it on and you're in the OS GUI but its not quite ready for you yet.

Next time I'll plan this out and save the log and keep adjusting the volume so I can compare the time of when the lag stopped to what the AppleTV was doing.

Side note, the AppleTV 4k (1st gen) decoding YouTubes VP9 videos uses the most amount of CPU of all the streaming apps. Netflix playing 4K Dolby Vision CPU usage peaked around at 165% with the low spots around 60%. With Youtube streaming 4K SDR (VP9) peaked at 288% and low spots were 135%. Doesn't mean much but it does show the difference of hardware decoding. Thought that was interesting.
