What a rollercoaster ride this has been!

When I bought it I said, "Helllllllllllllllllllllllllll no I'm not paying $400 extra for a stand". (But I will pay $2K for an Apple Studio which has power I probably don't need. I'm Tim Cook's target demo).

Then I got it and almost regretted not allowing myself to be further ripped off by paying extra for a stand that costs more than many 4K monitors.

So I bought a $40 stand off Amazon. But it's way too bulky on my desk.

So I bought another $90 stand. (I'll spend that $400 one way or the other if it kills me). It's not bulky but I realized it's actually a little too high! I think it's 1.6 inches. I compared it to my iMac and it's higher. But without the stand the screen is lower than the iMac. I always felt the iMac screen was high-ish.

So I removed the stand and realized.......I think I like the height as it is! At first I hated it only because I was used to the higher height on my iMac but this is actually probably the proper height at least for my desk. Most people probably actually set their monitors too high. Somehow when it's higher you perceive it to be bigger.

So I've ended up where I started from. Sometimes you can travel around the world only to find the treasure you were looking for was right in your own backyard. Or did I just summarize the plot to The Alchemist?

For any future ASD buyers. Just get the VESA mount option and purchase a good VESA mount. Don't give Apple the incentive to keep selling overpriced stands. You can buy a very high quality VESA mount for less than the height adjustable stand.

I was terrified at first about buying the tilt-only, but at the time, I wanted 2 displays and Costco had them in-stock (for $100 cheaper per device) vs waiting 6-12 weeks for tilt or adjustable from Apple.

Bought the 2 knowing that if I didn't love them, I could easily return them to Costco and wait it out.

Here I am months later and I still have no issues. There are some days when I feel like "oh I wish I could adjust it just a tad higher" but never to the point of bothering me.

I have a pretty nice adjustable chair and desk that can be altered if I feel like the monitors are too high/low.

I'd also be very picky in the sense that if I wanted height-adjustable, I'd have to buy it for both, which I just don't want to fork over that much more money for a stand.

Thanks for sharing that!

I received my tilt-only ASD from Costco and set it up. It’s just right. I , too, wasn’t initially happy about the price of the adjustable stand but checked the spec measurements before I ordered and believed it would be fine, and it is.

Like you, I knew that Costco would be an easy return.

I have the height adjustable version, which looks great and is very smooth to adjust. However, I strongly suspect I have it set to roughly the height of the tilt-only version.

From the specs, it seemed to me that the lowest setting of the height-adjustable stand was the same height as the tilt-only stand. Is that correct?

I have the tilt-only, and it is perfectly fine for me. In fact, I wouldn’t mind if it were a tad lower.

I always found my 27" iMac a little tall. The ASD tilt only is perfect for me. That varies a lot though, I tend to like my monitors lower than what many people around me use. I hate monitors that are up high.

Thanks for an amusing post! I had the same concern when I got my iMac--I was used to having a height adjustable display, and the iMac was a couple of inches higher than I'm used to. But I got used it, and now I'm comfortable dating this taller woman.
