"I want to thank all of you for supporting Apple all of these years. In April, we celebrated our 35th anniversary. Wow. We started out just like many of you have or are starting out...in a garage, or bedroom, or apartment. So... I have something I'd like to share today with all of you. I'm retiring."

Why Steve might retire at WWDC:

    -Loyal developer crowd
-Currently on an indefinite medical leave. Third medical leave in last few years.
-Pre-announced product announcements--- must be something bigger than all of them to have a surprise at the show. What could be bigger news than Steve's retirement?
-First major event since 35th anniversary
-Insistence upon press being in attendance
-A way to go out on top!
-it is going to be hard news to break one way or another to shareholders and other interested parties. May as well do it in conjunction with an event and presentation that shows Apple is healthy and has a great product lineup...
-He may step down as CEO but retain some leadership or consulting role.

I wondered if the reason for pre-announcing iCloud was to stop speculation about new hardware (iPhone 5) or anything else such as retirements. I read it as we are announcing that we are only talking about 3 items of software so nobody is disappointed when they expect more.

I don't think it's likely, sure he's probably retiring in the next few years but I think he's got another year or two before he does it.

It all boils down to his health and us being on the outside looking in. Its impossible to determine how well/ill he is. I think he'd love to run the company for another 10 or 20 years but truth be told, its highly unlikely. Its not like he's an old man. Just a human being dealing with some serious health issues.

That then looks like a buy opportunity since its the same company producing the same products. He's been away on medical leave after all.

yep. I the day SJ dies is wait a few days then buy up tons of Apple stock. I honestly do not expect it to climb as high as it is now and I expect the Apple worship to die down some as their god is dead but I do not see Apple going anywhere and they still will be strong.

Unless Steve is indeed the CHRIST.. and then he will be return the 2nd time. Some actually do believe Steve to be the Messiah who will return the 2nd time.

So all your elaborated theory is based on a future book, that will be released in March 2012.

We will see many new iPhones, iPads, iStores, Macs, iClouds....before something like this will be officially rumored.

I believe that if he is going to retire, he is not the one announcing it.
Someone like him will never retire, there will be feature in the future OS that will keep him alive, his legacy is already under construction, and more things to will come.

Guys like him are always creating stuff, and what we are seeing nowadays is just a taste of what will be coming out in the future, there is so much more than the iTunes store and all the things that are currently in the game.
The Apple vaults are full of secrets that we have no clue about them. maybe there will be a Nicolas Cage movie about breaking in...Or iOceans' 9:42

We will see many product releases after he is gone for good, there will be something like Made in Heaven by Queen after Freddy Mercury left this world.

He's retiring, kinda. The new data center in NC is actually Apple's version of IBM's Watson. They've recreated Steve's brain digitally to function in his absence. Tomorrow, the flip gets switched and Cloud Jobs will take the helm of Apple. The former Xserve team has been working on this for some time now.

I have the same feeling he is making the announcement at this WWDC.

Never happen. When he decides to retire, they will have done everything to minimize it. They certainly won't make a spectacle of it.

This. This pretty much sums up Steve Jobs.
