It's not that amazing. I'm just connected to the network at my university which is based on 100Mbps and 1Gbps switches. The university has a 1Gbps Internet connection through UNINETT. I can't download tv episodes from iTunes since I'm not in the USA, but software updates from Apple are downloaded amazingly fast sometimes.

No, many computers at the university here are connected by 1Gbps switches/routers, but of course they also share the same 1Gbps connection to the Internet as the rest of us.
