I got a new iPhone 15 this week. Out of interest, what exactly is iOS doing when the below appears in Settings > Battery?

Ongoing Device Setup

Your iPhone is completing setup steps in the background. Battery life and thermal performance may improve once finished.

Downloading data mostly I think. Like Photos, Videos, Music etc. and other cloud stuff that was set to stay offline too.

And indexing all data.

All of your responses are correct.

It typically appears when you use direct transfer or iCloud backup during the iPhone setup process.

After the setup is complete, it should be there as it redownloads pictures, apps, media, and local data from your old iPhone.

Be patient if it only barely appeared after you passed the Welcome to iPhone screen, which is the last part of the iPhone setup assistant.

Wishing you all the best.

I updated last week from 17. to RC 18.5. it never stopped the background thing, then I updated to final 18.5 it began, stopped a while and began. I reset everything (setting etc.) then it stopped, now its back again. Have it always on charger

Always on a charger? For how long do you keep your iPhone on your charger?

Do you use MagSafe?
