Seems you may have mis-posted. I am a window switcher but I'm discussing setting up an iMac with my current PB.

Windows switchers! Just get a 2 button USB Mouse, you will be so much happier. Even serious Mac users proably have at least a 2 button mouse or some sort of extra device (I have a Tablet).

So my current lynksys is fine, no Airport needed?

Would like to hear from someone who syncs everything between two or multiple macs.

When you first start the iMac you will have the option of importing files, programs and settings from another Mac. All you need is a firewire cable (6pin-6pin).

This will start you out with everything synced. Later on, I'm not sure how easy it is to automatically sync everything. It is easy to network the two computers and copy stuff back and forth.

Then of course there is .Mac that lets you sync documents between computers, I think, but I'm not sure how that works. I have .Mac but I haven't set up syncing.

I am a switcher. I am still waiting for my Power Mac to get here. Anyway, I thought about getting a two button mouse to start with, but now, I have about decided to stick with the single button mouse and do it the Mac way with Command-click to get the right-click options that I would be use to with Windows. :)
Your choice, but you'll enjoy the G5 more with a two button mouse.

nothing wrong with the one button mouse, i use Apple's BT mouse with my powerbook, and actually i prefer it because i end up using the keyboard more which in turn ends up being much faster than the mouse most of the time

but whatever floats your boat floats it....

When I copy same name files from work (via usb key chain memory) to my PB it asks if I want to replace the file on the harddrive, but doesn't indicate which one is the newest one.

In Windows it will both state the date of file of both the one on my PB and the date of the file of my usb memory. Can I change Apple to do the same?

When organizing files it is very convenient to use two finder windows, navigate and drag files back and forth between them and possibly the desktop and app windows.

This is also where Window management comes in. I find it most efficient to not use full screen windows on the Mac because that helps the drag and drop workflow. Many Mac apps also use floating tool palettes, and if you insist on working with full screen windows the floating tool palettes can get annoying. My advice is to take the plunge and get used to working with smaller windows that can be moved and dragged to fit the workflow. Unfortunately it's not always possible with a screen size of only 1024x768.

You've described exactly what I'm enjoying most from OSX. I remember the first time I checked Macs out at the Apple store. I clicked maximise and asked how come it didn't fill the screen. :) But now I love being able to see multiple windows and move them around so easily. It does make transferring files easier, and I can do stuff like watch a video while working at the same time. I'll need some time to fully take advantage of things like Expose, but so far it's very cool.

Also, another question.

Where is 'thumbnails' like on windows? When I look at my SD card via 'Finder', I either have to open up iPhoto or do a preview of individual pixs.

Is there a way to show small jpgs of each within Finder?

Yes, there is, but it's a bit less convenient and advanced in Panther compared to Windows.

In Finder:
- Make sure you're viewing as Icon (View -> as Icons) (command-1)
- Open View Options (View -> Show View Options) (command-J)
- Check the "Show icon preview" check-box.

Thanks. I was able to do it. What a joke compared to windows. The pixs are sooooo small I literally can't see them. Mark a small battle victory for Windows.

A question regarding for Word. When I go "file save as" it only lets me select one of the folders that you have placed on the left side of Finder. I want to save it under one of those folders. i.e. it's under 'Home' 'May 2005'. File save as will only show 'Home'. In windows I would simply double-click on 'Home' and May 2005 folder would pop up to save to it.

For the previews, make sure that you're not only in icon view, but you changed the icon size for your pictures folder to a larger size. You can go up to 128x128 -- admittedly not *huge*, but you can definitely get fair sized previews.

For Word...I think I might understand what you mean. You should see a blue down arrow next to the name of the file to be saved. If you click it, you get the full save dialog, which should let you do what you need. In most programs (incl. Word, AFAICS) which mode the save dialog is in will sticky -- so if you bump it up to the full size dialog, it will be that way the next time you save too, automatically.

Wow! The preview is now better than XP! Moving it to 128 x 128 makes it much larger than Windows.

Regarding Word, that was what I was looking for. I swear I wouldn't have this computer anymore if it wasn't for other members helping me out. ... It's getting better all the time. I'm beginning to see the light!

Yeah! You're lucky you don't have an ACD 30" though, or, erm, you would need a magnifying glass! :p ;)

You mean I'm lucky I don't have a 30"?! I wish I was so unlucky! :p

Also, from a previous question that has been unanswered...

How the heck do I burn a CD. I have a kids game I want to make a copy for my own use (toddler who has to hold the cd and put it in himself). It will eventually break.

Anyways, I did a help search and can't figure it out.

CDs are most easily copied using Toast. If you don't have Toast, then Disk Utility can do the same (although a bit more awkward).

Note that many Game CDs have a built-in copy protection, and a copy will not necessarily work. This thread might help you with your problem.

Am I imagining things or is Toast cost $100? I will rarely copy discs or data. Can anyone provide a link or info on how to use what the PB has (i.e. Disk Utility)? Thanks.

I think it goes something like this:
- Insert original CD
- Start Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility)
- In one of the menus on the top bar there should be something like a New Disk Image option with an arrow, hover the mouse pointer over it to get a sub menu. There should be an option to create a disk image from the inserted CD there. Select it.
- Give the disk image a name and wait for it to be created.
- Eject the original CD

Now you have two options. Either to play directly from the disk image without any physical CD or to burn a copy of the disk image.

Option 1:
- Quit Disk Utility
- Locate the disk image and double click it. This is the virtual equivalent of inserting the CD. The disk image will appear in Finder as a white disk.
- Start the game normally.

Option 2:
- Insert an empty CD
- In Disk Utility, highlight the disk image you just created. It should be in the bottom left section of Disk Utility's main window.
- Search in the menu system for a burn this image to disk option. Select it.
- You must probably give the CD a name or something, then burn it.

Will Virtual PC v. 7 work with Tiger?

Just from what I've seen around the traps, it'll work but there might be some features that struggle. From memory, some form of networking won't work but it's not the default and it doesn't affect heaps of people. Also, you'll probably get a warning dialogue about this on start up.

I'm not positive of this though, as I don't have VPC 7.

Well I'll be the tester. Could someone direct me to the best thread on instructions to put Tiger on my PB. I have seen a couple of threads on the subject. I want to install with the potential to go back to how it is right now in case Tiger screws everything up.
