I agree. the problem with Apple in the past few years is that they are prepared to forfeit customer satisfaction for their profits. iP4 is a perfect example. Truth is like all mega corporations, Apple dont give a ****. They have your money now and have invested it- making more money and your left waiting because the iPad itself is way more important than you.

Except, of course, Apple don't bill your card until they ship the product... They may put a pre-approval on the card to stop you spending the money, effectively reserving it so that you can still pay for the product when it does ship, but the money is still yours, you haven't been billed until the product leaves Apple's and they get no interest or anything else until that happens.

I love the way people say they should have waited a month for launch...

They sold 1 million or thereabouts in its first week/weekend.
NO MATTER when you release a product if it is greeted by those demands in 1 territory alone it is going to result in a back log.

Having tight (albeit with a manageable replenish rate) supply and very high demand it is NOT a bad thing from a marketing perspective.

As for putting off International launch so America can get more first dibs.....

They have more than likely already allocated say 500,000 - 1 million units for the launch in 25th March for international territories. I am confident they will not divvy up those to the USA just because you have a tight supply.

Retailers in those other territories would cry blue murder if there was a delay seeing as how a date has been named, and clearance procedure well underway with lingering stock and shelf space starting to appear in prep for it's launch next week.

No I am sorry to say thatnew USA orders are just going to have to go through this terrible indignity & injustice of 'waiting' for your order ;)
I know it will be hard to get over, but I'm sure time will heal those wounds................. it just that it'll take maybe 4-5 weeks :p

It really doesn't bother me if I have to wait an extra week or more as long as Apple doesn't rush things and get the manufacturing right. I ordered mine early in the morning of the 11th and don't mind if I have to wait until early April if it means there isn't a backlight leak on my iPad 2.

I suspect the point of the whole process is to generate longer lines for a longer period of time. The media generally only reacts to what they can produce on video and long lines of people camping outside Apple stores makes for good video on the evening news. First they have absolutely no stock available to start shipping on Friday to those people who stayed up into the wee hours to order. They had already shipped everything they could make into the retail channels. Having the device go on sale in the stores at 5 pm on Friday guaranteed long lines and they had plenty of opportunity to get the video and get it onto the evening news. And the stock goes up. Now they are opening early tomorrow morning after a serious restocking today and there will be more lines and lots of happy customers, news at 11. Face it people, they want you in a line so they can take your picture. In a sense, we are all pawns in the stock market game that companies play on behalf of their shareholders. Interesting fact - Fortune said in a recent article that 72% of Steve Jobs' personal fortune is in Disney stock he got from selling Pixar. Just a random factoid.

If they wanted longer lines they would have had early pre-orders, had notices push back where they were saying 5-6 weeks wait for pre-orders come launch day and the stores would be mobbed.

So no that is not it.

Why can't people believe Apple is making them as fast as they can and they are selling even faster than they can make them.

I highly doubt they are holding back supply for publicity or to keep demand high.

-each iPad shipped is more cash in the bank (I know they have tons of cash already but still more is better than less)

-each iPad in the wild is free advertising for them generating word of mouth interest.

-customers won't be lured by competitors tablets if they have an iPad 2 in hand

-businesses don't like to unnecessarily frustrate customers.

Man I ordered my white 64gb wifi only at 12:42, 18 minutes before it went on sale at 1 and it hasn't even prepped to ship. My thinking is, if you pay $700 you should get the thing delivered by now

I ordered the same exact model at 12:48AM and mine shipped on Sunday. It is already in the US and scheduled to be delivered on Thursday. That's very odd that you ordered a few minutes before me but yours hasn't shipped??

Mine is STILL sitting in HK.... its been 2 days and no update thru FedEx.... grrrr.

It's the Nintendo Wii marketing strategy. Keep the shelves empty to keep demand high.

I really don't think this is a "marketing strategy" shortage... I'm sure it's a shortage based on how fast they can make them. Apple seems to always push final production back as far as possible to the planned launch day.

But in my neck of the woods, the iPad 2 is no where to be found. Wen't looking for one last night and everyone was out or has not even seen any stock yet.

I think supplies will continue to appear constrained until Toshiba can get their NAND production back in order. That's probably going to be a huge bottleneck.

I ordered at 1:05 and mine has yet to ship. This is ridiculous.

Same here - but looking at the picture, it looks like that one was ordered from AT&T, not Apple - and Apple ships form Chine, they probably had some limited US stock. Still stinks, mine isn't even in the 'prepared for shipment' phase (so China is not really an excuse)

Since many electronics components are produced in Japan - including those for the iPad - the 4-5 week delay seems reasonable, and may be lengthened as the crisis continues.

so does this mean when the iPad goes on sale in Australia there will be a 4-5 week wait straightaway?

If so then it looks like they will only arrive at your doorstep around about 2-6 May: 5 week waiting period + 1 week shipping. lol

OMG iPad

:)I know you guys are having a crazy time getting your iPad. My wife told me that I needed to sell my first gen iPad before I could get the newer one. I was on pens and needles waiting for it to sell on ebay. I finally sold it for 550.

It was about 8:00pm on launch day that I got nervous that I would not find one all weekend. I called BestBuy and they said that all through out Charlotte NC they were all sold out. So I called Target and they said the same thing. I called the apple store and they said they could not tell me from day to day if they would have any. So finally i remembered that walmart was going to sell iPads. I started calling around and I finally found 3 of them. That night about an hour and a half away from where we live.

When we got there it was a pain to get it. THey kept telling me that it showed they have them but could not find them. My wife started to get mad that we drove that far and no one at walmart could even find them. After back and forth they started getting a little rude about it. So my wife started to get ill back at them and said we are not leaving tell we get one. So after about an hour to a hour and a half we finally got a 64gb wifi black ipad.

It goes to show you that if you really want one you will find it. You just have to look hard. I know probably don't have anymore. I find it crazy that this release is so CRAZY!!!!!! LOL:)

Wow. I thought that the time would go the other way -- maybe these are just conservative. Or I wonder if stores are just going to be resupplied first.

I ordered at 1:05 and mine has yet to ship. This is ridiculous.

I ordered from Apple at 5:50am (EST of course) and mine hasn't shipped. The estimate at the time was 3-5 days but I guess I expected it to be quicker. Today's the 3rd business day since the order and I got up this morning like a kid on Christmas looking for my ship notification only to find an empty inbox. I keep reminding myself how silly this is because I have a 1st-gen iPad and the upgrades aren't that incredible.

4-5 weeks wait? more like epic fail. :)

Another factor could also be the international market. If Apple is indeed going to be launching in a handful of other countries on the 25th, there has to remain some supply for that?

Of course the reality is that by the end of this week, Apple will put out a press release stating - "what an amazing response we've had to the iPad 2 and they we've already sold 3 million units and as a result to this fantastic demand, international lunches will be pushed back to April (i.e. 29th of April)"

I love watching the hysteria of people who 'have to have an iPad2,' not because it's a particular need, but because 'you can't get one' - so that makes people want them even more!

Apple is master of the consumer psychology.

I have a first-gen iPad and am happy to wait.
