I ordered a MacBook online with store pickup. Went to the store and after showing the QR code on my phone was handed the laptop. Excited I left and driving home only did I realize I had no receipt to show Apple for proof of purchase or if a police officer pulled me over and asked to show proof of purchase. Went back to the Apple store and asked for a receipt and they said they do not give them out that it is in your iCloud account. Said I bought it as a guest and after a lot of searching in my iCloud account found it, which I could print off at home. Just found it odd for Apple and wondering if this is normal procedure for them?

Wait, did you lie about buying it as a guest? There's no way the purchase was "magically" tied to your account if you didnt provide your Apple ID / Email.

Also, why would you need a receipt for a cop? If you are getting pulled over, its not because you "possibly stole a apple laptop", its because you didnt something else.

Regardless, Apple provides a receipt if you shop in the store and if you ask at the time of purchase they will. But, if you online order or order through the app while in the store, they encourage no paper receipts. They have always tried to minimize how much paper they use and it doesnt make sense for someone who made a digital order to ask for a paper receipt. So it makes sense that the person who helped you fed you some BS and encouraged you to look in your email for your receipt.

Still doesnt make sense why you would want a paper receipt when you ordered online and that receipt is permanent. Also Apple doesn't need proof of purchase from you, you have a QR code AND the serial number is automatically tied to you.

I understand the process now after understanding how Apple does it.
Let me clarify a few things. I ordered from home and went to pickup from the store for the Apple experience.
If you purchase as a guest your order is not automatically tied to an Apple ID account. As per Apple ‘s Confirmation email “

How do I view or change my order?

Go to Order Status, then sign in to add your order to your Apple ID. You can make changes to, return, or cancel eligible items there.”
Apple should have also stated that this is where you can view your receipt.
Once I signed in to my Apple ID ( after I left the store and returned) then my order was added and I had a digital receipt which I could print out if I wanted a hard copy.
I agree with Apple ‘s desire to reduce its paper footprint and how easy it is to get a digital receipt. However, in my situation, I never received an email receipt to the email I used to purchase as a guest( which I showed the employee the email string) , was not offered the option of a physical receipt or told how to get a receipt by signing into my Apple ID account at time of pickup and tying my order to my Apple ID.
I wanted a physical receipt b/c I was buying a high ticket item which to return, get warranty claim , purchase AppleCare or just show proof of ownership one always asks to show your receipt.
Its all good. Not to bore members with this. 😀

I had no receipt to show Apple for proof of purchase
So many retailers shy away from paper receipts. I frequently go to CVS for small items, like halloween candy and I walk out w/o any candy. I could very well walk in, load up on product and leave. Btw, the doors are at the opposite end to where the self service cash registers are, so its not unusual to be walking through the store with an arm full of product - and since they charge for bags, most people just walk out with the stuff loose ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

For apple, I generally just make sure I get an email receipt and I'm good to go.

Wait, why would a police officer care about your MacBook purchase?
