Online Purchase

If I purchase my iPad from an online retailer other than Apple, can I take it in to an Apple store if I have problems with it? I would think any light bleeds or possible defects would be covered by AppleCare. I'm trying to avoid having to post it off if I have a problem. I wanted to make sure before I pulled the trigger on my online order.
