Backblaze a little restrictive if you need to restore data.

"When restoring files, Backblaze limits each download to 1 gigabyte at a time. Or the company says it will overnight a DVD with 4 gigabytes for $100, or a USB hard drive with all the files for about twice that."

May I ask where you got this info? I use backblaze and I can download way more than 1 gigabyte at a time.

mcruzader - It was posted on their web site

ravencr,

Haven't had a chance to try - MBP video card went out
Will post results when MBP gets back from AppleCare

I've got everything fully backed up on my Buffalo TB using memeo autobackup that was supplied with it, and I'm working on getting it all onto SafeCopyBackup, as well. It takes quite a while over the slow internet connection I have. :(

So, you're brand new MBP video card went out? Did you have it clocked higher than the way it was delivered?

Chris

MBP not brand new anymore, over 1 year old now.
Mighty happy :D I spent the money on Apple extended warranty.
No over clocking here, this is my business computer.

SafeCopy PC Software worked flawless

Anybody try SafeCopy on a Mac yet? I downloaded last night for the free trial and am just having it backup my documents as a trial. It doesn't seem to slow down the computer (which is good), but it seems to get stuck. I have stopped and restarted the backup a few times after it goes nearly an hour on the same file. When I restart it, it seems to cruise through. I'm not sure if I'm just being impatient and messing it up or if it's really slow.

I could see how it might deliberately start/stop to manage the bandwidth on their end as well as on the users. I really want to like it because I like the fact that they don't delete your files after 30 days, but I'm not going to go with a service that I have to keep monkeying with in the future (again .. it might just be me messing with it for now).

Anybody else have experience with SafeCopy to share?

Mine's been do the same thing on my new 17" Macbook Pro. When I talked to them recently, they were updating the Mac software to eliminate some of these hang-up problems, so I'm just going to hang tight on them. I definitely like their system. Plus, if you download their free plugin for your iphone, you can search for any file on the backup and share it with someone while you're on the road. I've found this really valuable, since I haven't figured out how to save files effectively on my iphone to attach to emails from my iphone.

Chris

I'll be trying out the new update for safe copy when I get home. I'll let everyone how it works.

Chris

idrive and dropbox. idrive to regularly back up specific directories...set it up once and never have to think about it again. dropbox for sharing between different computers (and other people). dropbox is useful for keeping the same configurations between various computers - so 1Password is kept consistent, iChat logs, etc.

Backblaze much better than Mozy

May I ask where you got this info? I use backblaze and I can download way more than 1 gigabyte at a time.

Yeah, I second that, I've had no problems doing large restores on Backblaze.

Backblaze is way more Mac friendly and most importantly they don't limit your upload speeds like Mozy does. Since signing up with Backblaze I'm cancelling my Mozy account - too many frustrations with their support. Forget about Carbonite, they're junk, I tried them out for 2 weeks and gave up. They're also well known for faking their reviews.

I just started using iDrive - it offers 150gb of personal storage for $5us a month. It is amazing, and yes it works with OS X. The first backup was a little slow, but it could be because of my speeds.

I highly recommend it. The backup interface is really easy to use, you can schedule backups etc.

Just my two cents.

Do they limit your upload speed? I have a 10Mbps upload connection and I get that with Backblaze and Dropbox but Mozy limits customers to 1.3Mbps.

Can you use the same account for both MAC and PC? I know they have both versions.

Mozy vs Backblaze

As a photographer with a few TB of raw photos I was looking for an online backup. Mozy looked good but did not allow raw files. Most did not until I found BackBlaze. The full restore is a little pricier than some but they do not restrict file types. I just finished my first backup and it only took 52 days or so. It was simple. I was able to get 14 months for $50 bucks so that is $3.58 a month. I figure if I need to restore I can download it in chunks and not spend the money for the hard drive in the mail feature. Either way that is cheaper than the experience I had last year when two drives went out and I had to get my IT department involved in recovering my drives. I was about to the point where I was going to restore from my emergency DVD back ups. Yikes!

Chris,

What is your take on safe copy vs iDrive? I want to be able to utilize for both Mac (2) and PC (1) backup.

Crash Plan experiences, anyone?

What about CrashPlan? Anyone have any experience with them?

The nice thing about this is that it's free if you backup to a friend's or family member's computer. Just buy an external (or even internal) hard drive and set it up at your friend/family member's place and then you can backup to there. They also can backup to your system as well. Only issue I can see is if you want to avoid an act of God, or something local, you need to find a friend or family member to backup to that isn't close by. However, the close by thing would be nice if you have an external - things go bad on your system, you can run over and grab the external then restore.

You can even backup to the CrashPlan servers for a fee too.

Thinking of doing this, but want feedback from others.

Also, some ISP's allow you to use your webhosting space as a backup - this would be great in conjunction with MacFUSE/SSHFS. Not all ISP's allow this - so read your TOS first.

I've used carbonite (great on PC, horrible on mac), and currently use Mozy.

I haven't tried backblaze - couldn't find on their site whether they have a maximum storage or not.

Right now I've got about 300GB of pictures in my aperture library I backup online, so space is a priority. Mozy takes FOREVER to upload - I had to reinstall and it's been over 2 weeks and I'm maybe 10% uploaded at this point.

mozy has just released a new client which allows faster uploads.. although not sure how fast

Still limited to 1.3Mbps. It's a joke and makes their unlimited plan useless as it takes too long to backup.

Backblaze is also unlimited backup. Yeah, this is why I gave up on Mozy, speed limiting to 1.3Mbps would take forever - I just reinstalled OS X and the delay in resyncing made me look for an alternate cloud provider.

I have a 10Mbps upload line and so far have 150GB backed up to Backblaze. Only takes a few days for me to upload.

Mozy allows RAW files. No problem with my Canon CRW and CR2 files.

Full restore pricey? I don't order the restore DVD, I just download the ZIP file. Backblaze had a coupon that saved me 20%. If you ask nicely they may still allow use ... if you're a former HP Upline customer ;)

Trying Mozy, IDrive, and SafeCopy. IDrive worked perfectly and backed up test files quickest. Very easy to set up. I have had Mozy for some time but it is not as easy as IDrive. I just installed SafeCopy and have problems immediately. It cannot find any internet connection... I am uninstalling and will try again. I hope I can resolve this as I want to use on both MAC and PC This is currently on a PC as my iMac is somewhere between China and east cost US...

Dropbox

I've been very pleased with Dropbox. I upgraded to their 50GB total storage. The only complaint is that upload speeds are sometimes lacking. (I get around 100-300k a sec).

Drobo is a great product, just didn't fit my needs.

I do data entry and accounting for a number of companies. I was looking for an EASY way to make secure this data. Drobo multiple, cross span hard drive protection, almost like a RAID without the problems.

Problems
Drobo is not cheap
Drobo is very slow, and extremely slow if you need to rebuild a drive (16 - 25 hours)
Drobo writes data so only itself can read it.
Using it 6 months, I was not sure of the integrity of my data (3 rebuilds and 1 total data loss (fortunately had other backups)). Others on Drobo forums also showed the same concerns.

I now have a hard drive dock (Newertechnology Voyager Q) the four drives from drobo and a few other external drives at different locations.
Life is easier, I feel my data is safer, and I saved a few hundred dollars.
Works best for me.:D

Yes, I have the same setup. 1 Voyager Q with multiple HD's and 4 other external HD's - rotated weekly into safes. I don't trust proprietary RAID like Drobo and all the comments have said it's FW800 is SLOOOWBO.
