So the OK status in the profiler lies if its bad sticks?

Also would you get kernel panics if a dimm was faulty but had no data in a stick, or does it start to kernel panic once data has entered the dimm?

Two of the sticks showed "OK" in OSX, but when I did the Apple Hardware Test (Extended) it gave me memory error.
I took all RAM out, only left Apple RAM, and did the test again and got zero errors, so it was Crucials fault.

What I was getting at and implying, is Apple Profiler reliable? as it still said OK even when the two were faulty...

I would have assumed the profiler would have said faulty or something if the sticks were bad. Or so one would think... no?

Ok this is bull*****.

New Crucial RAM is BAD again! The DIMM lights light on the board...two seem to be bad.

Bye bye Crucial. I'm going with OWC. I am going to get my money back for the shipping that Crucial charged me!

I know we've had our differences, but man I really feel bad for ya.

I hope the memory from OWC works out for you.

FWIW I always see RAM priced cheaply on Ebay from "RAM Jet". Reading sellers reviews finds many many people happy with memory for their Mac Pro.

If OWC memory doesn't work out, perhaps there is a problem with the risers. Let us know how the OWC memory turns out for ya. :apple:

Hey man,
no worries....

I just tried to mix and match the good ones and the bad Crucial ram...so far, I put in 2 good ones (I have a total of 8x2GB in my posession) and no lights went on for the 2x4GBs so far...ran the apple hardware test got this error now:

4SNS/1/40000001:VMBS

It didnt say 4mem, so I'm guessing this is not for the RAM???

Update. the 4ANS is an error for your computer cover being open. I closed it and ran the test again, and 2 sticks passed the test!

I'm going to try mixing and matching 2 remaining RAM chips, and if the test passes on these, then I'm set...I will send all the mixed RAM back to Crucial.

Will keep you guys updated.

I think this thread will help others looking for RAM too...so not even Crucial is "great".

Alright, couldn't get 4 of them to work without issues (mixing and matching). I always get the 4MEM error when I have 4 of them...if I leave 2 of them for a total of 2GB, I ran a test and got zero errors.

Ok I'm sending these back to Crucial and they can shove it.

I'm now in need of RAM. Are the OWC "Netlist" versions good? The heatsinks don't look like the apple ones...?? What RAM modules do the OWC's use?

The Crucial heatsinks look EXACTLY the same as the Apple ones.

I got 2x2g of the Netlist OWC ram. Worked great, the heatspreaders are great, they aren't the same as the apple but they work fine.

Thanks for the info. I'm 90% leaning towards OWC Netlist but my mind can be changed anytime while I wait for Crucial to send my money back.

Seriously, I am really dissapointed in Crucial. Two different batches of RAM are bad??? I'm never buying Crucial again, I always stuck with OCZ on the PC side and have had zero problems. Kingston sucks too.

By the way, why is the netlist OWC cheaper than the Crucial???

Damn dudes, I'm still undecided.,.OWC seems stinky with their 15% restocking fee!

I want to seriously stay with Crucial, but with these 2 bad batches I am really getting annoyed!

I'm in a dilemma, help me out!!

Let's help SDAVE out here. Anyone else buy FB-DIMMS from either one of these resellers on Ebay? Anyone using Optival by Omni or Hypervelocity RAM and can chime in here????

Thanks for trying to help me out.

I just ordered OWC Netlist 8GB kit.
They told me that they'll waive the restocking fee and extend the returns to 30 days on this one if it's bad.

Will be receiving it next week...

Wow I've never had such a headache with any computer in the last 15 years that I've been using them.

Maybe Mac Pro RAM is more finicky than MBP RAM, but I've ordered plenty from OWC and everything's been great.

I had 1x512mb stick, 2 1x1gb sticks, then 2x512 sticks for the gf, an AL-Mercury enclosure, and an AL-Mercury dual enclosure. Great company.

Thanks for the positive note. Im on the phone with Crucial so I can send these back. Already ordered the OWC, hope (Crosses fingers) it goes well. I have not had such problems with RAM during all this time when I was setting workstations and desktop computers.

I wasted 6 hours yesterday mixing and matching and running hardware tests...such a waste of time.

Freaking picky apple! I wish their RAM was cheaper, maybe $1,200 for 8GB, I'd consider it.

Put me in the camp of being frustrated with the Mac Pro and memory as well.

I'm probably the opposite of you. I started with OWC and ended up with Crucial. Although, I never got BAD RAM (where it didn't recognize)...I just got RAM from OWC that always had ECC errors.....then my first batch from Crucial also had high temps and ECC errors. I finally got a good batch from Crucial that has been working fine.

5 of the ram chips were giving me a warning light on the riser card. I don't want to bother with Crucial again for the third time. If OWC is bad, I don't know what else to do. I don't trust ebat for Ram.

I ordered 2x1 gb from Crucial, installed it, and it's fine knock on wood.

Sorry to hear about this SDAVE.

You must've been really lucky...what are the odds of having bad RAM from different batches? Very rare.

I think the OWC's that I'll be getting next week will have the same issue...I've become a pessimist

Yeah is it possibly something with the riser? That seems strange

It can't be the risers because two Crucials worked ok and passed a test..

What I will say is it may not necessarily be faulty. I had this same problem on a PC with hi-spec memory. It was showing errors and blue screening the system. I had to slacken the timings for it to become stable, but it wouldn't run at CAS2.
Eventually after I got a new motherboard and went to PCI-E, the memory ran from plug and play, which it never was faulty.

I do know some memory is extremely picky with some systems. Crucial isn't a write off though, as I have my Mac filled with Crucial.

Also I thought with memory it was always adviced the keep the numbers even... or does this work differently on the Mac Pro's?

Well I got two 4GB kits...each RAM module is 2GB. Same exact models for all. I had 8 in my posession two days ago and only 3 of them were working. The riser board's LED lit up on 5 of them.

Original Mac Pro ram has zero problems. Maybe I was unlucky because Crucial has been good to me (non ECC memory) in the past and have used their Ballistix ram before....but I don't think they're doing enough Q&A on their expensive modules. The 2GB ones have problems for sure...they need to look at it.

Transintl ram gave me the same headaches. I got 8gb Crucial and they work fine. 8 core mac pro way too picky with ram thats for sure.
