From reading this, I hope mine(PB) doesn't end up in someone elses house. BTW do the 3 attempts usually happen one after another witihn 3 days?

Suppose you could send it to work or parents, could be difficult if your never at home though.

It's quite nippy in the UK, ordered my sister an eMac on Sunday night and came tuesday morning.

yup, i totally agree! I ordered a refurb powerbook (thought it might take a little longer being a refurb) and it was with me within 28 hours! and it came from america according to the order tracking. awesome delivery time! 😀

perhaps Apple and/or FedEx Ground has different policies in different areas or for shipments of different values.

i was able to pick my ibook up last night at the FedEx Ground station in New Hampshire, USA with an ID and no problem after one failed delivery attempt.

I'm starting to worry about an iBook + iPod order I'm waiting to receive from Apple online store UK. It shipped last Wednesday, but they don't give very precise details of delivery date, etc, nor am I able to access the site myself because it is an education order of my brother's who is at uni in Leeds.

If it doesn't turn up this afternoon, no-one will be in for the next two days becasue I'm starting a new job and have training all day tomorrow and Thursday, then I will probably be working most weekdays, when I get my shift schedule. No-one will be in the house all day after today. I've hung around not going anywhere for the last few days, because they don't even say what day it will arrive. How do they expect people to constantly man their house? Don't they know that people have to go out and work?!

I see I am not the only one..

Apple should make this shipping policy known, besides burried on their website.

I had it shipped to MY address because I figured that (like with any other fed ex delivery from any other company) I could pick it up from my local fed ex center after I got home. Or I could hunt down my driver which I know and find a way to get it from her. However, Apple DOES NOT ALLOW THIS, not Fed Ex! This is Apple's policy. They specifically have it sent from a particular fed ex center that customers are not allowed to pick up packages from and specifically make it so you have to be physcially there to get it. Maybe they should specifically state this before taking my credit card number.

All of my neighbors/friends, etc work. Most work in NYC and they commute. And it is too late now to try to find someone around here to send it to. So no one can lug a G5 around on the subway, bus, train, etc. I would have it sent to mailboxes which is across the street, but it is too late to change the address.

I am going to leave a note tomorrow for the driver and hopefully try to talk him/her into leaving it across the street at mailboxes. but I doubt he will call my cell as it isn't really his responsibility to due so.

hell he could even leave it with the ups driver on this block since I know him. but that probably wouldn't happen.

So in no way is it my fault! Apple's policy is totally different from anyone elses. Even J&R Music world which is as strict as one company can be, isn't this bad.

They sure didn't have any problems shipping my applecare, external harddrive, etc UPS. Dell didn't have a problem shipping the Monitor the standard way to where I could pick it up. And in the past when I ordered my G4 I had no problem getting it.

This is such a huge pain in the ass. Especially when all one has been looking forward to is getting their new computer and getting back to business!

and instead of being a smart ass why don't you read wtf I wrote and understand what is really going on. Who is whining. I am just stating what happened, how it is a pain in the ass and telling others to be aware so they know what to expect and can avoid the same problem. Hence, the word Advice at the end of my topic ass. and my real office is in Washington state. I work from home and on the road.

I can understand the frustration. I have a FedEx facility just less than 5 miles away from my home. The nearest UPS is between 15 to 25 miles away.

For hat reason I will ask/demand FedEx delivery. Thank you for your comments, I will probably never order from Apple online, unless I am given the option in writing to pick-up at my local FedEx office (which for me is "hub" as well).

That being said i can understand the "over" caution on both FedEx and Apple's part. You generally ar e looking at high-dollar items compared to other deliveries. The question becomes one of how do we balance the needs of the customer an the companies?

they just left mine at the door

I ordered a G5 iMac, .Mac kit and Apple-care warranty kit.

They first attempted delivery of the .Mac kit and Apple-care warranty kit. We were not there so they left the FedEx door tag that said the would return the next day. My wife stayed home to receive it the second go around. All went well.

A few weeks later I noted my G5 iMac had been shipped. Later that same day my wife called to tell me that she came home to find the G5 iMac had simply been left by FedEx in plain view on our uncovered front porch 😱 . Furthermore, this was no non-descript brown box - the actual shipping box has a huge picture of the G5 iMac computer on the side. We were glad our neighborhood is a relatively safe place.

This seems substandard shipping service to say the least.
Sincerely,
Bill

My PowerBook was dropped in a beat up brown box. I thought it was some software, because it so so beat up and they just left it there. Plus, there was a box from Apple that couldn't be dropped off because no one was home.

Turns out, the beat up box was the PowerBook. The other stuff was the software. I was worried by PowerBook would be damaged (the box was nearly destroyed!) but it was fine. 🙂

Good luck with your Mac!

This reminds me of a few years ago. i had placed an order with a camera vendor for an employee purchase. UPS/FedEx left it at the door without a signature.

I never authorized either to leave a package without a signature. It would have been easy for me to get 2K to 3K $US in goods, The whole process does not make sense to me.

OMG. They just left a box that was cleary a computer out in the open? I'd be right pissed if I had a package like that sitting outside in plain view. Guy must have been on his way to lunch when he pulled that one.

I just had to add my 2 cents...

Well, after reading this it sounds like dejavu. I'll try to make this short as it's pretty similar to a lot of your stories. Here's mine. First off, I'm from Toronto and ordered my new 20" G5 iMac from the Apple Canada 1-800 number. I'm a freelance designer and don't have much of an idea where I'll be a month ahead of time so I specifically asked if I could change the delivery location closer to the arrival date and they said "sure"...twice! Let's just skip to the end here. Just like you I had no idea I couldn't re-route this thing and after 10 phone calls with both Apple and FedEx explaining how I couldn't be home to accept it, I had to take a day off. I asked FedEx for a gaurantee because taking a day off was costing me $200 and they said "sure". Well, it didn't come and after a few more VERY angry phone calls they dropped it off that night. I spent the next few days on the phone with both Apple and FedEX HQ's demanding a reimbursement for the $200 I lost while waiting for a package that never arrived. FedEx simply apologized over and over again, but, Apple eventually told me to go to the online store and pick out something I liked for around $200. I chose a $210 set of speakers and then thanked them very much for the gesture.

Not bad eh? Until the Apple guy asked me where I'd like them shipped?

I know I won't really ever have that problem. I live 10 minutes from one of FedEx's main hubs. It's really nice.

But can you pick up there? I asked if I could pick up the software and I got a nice, resounding, "No." So although you live near a FedEx hub, you might not be able to get your stuff from that hub.

better than apple australia.
i don't know who does their shipping but a while ago (maybe 1-2 years) i forget, my brother's computer was left it the back door where anyone could have gone and taken it. grrr

when i ordered mine this year i was going to have it sent to my dad's work because there is always someone there during business hours. i'm glad i didn't though because my computer was delivered as i was walking out the door to go to work on a saturday morning ???

wow, didn't think my post would bring to light so many others who had the same problems. I guess I should state the final outcome of my situation. I also live near a fed ex facility, but that has nothing to do with whether they let you pick it up or not.

Anyways, after all the "I can't pick it up", blah blah crap, they ended up leaving mine outside as well in a nice big G5 box which was plain as day! The ironic thing is my ups driver called my cell and mentioned "uh fed ex left your computer outside, you may want to come home to get it." amazing.

Apple makes a big stink about not letting customers pick up there orders for whatever reasons. Fed Ex doesn't let you pick it up because of Apple, yet they have no problem leaving a brand new expensive computer outside.

Thankfully, everything worked out because I was able to get it without worrying about chasing fed ex down and it didn't get stolen, but they sure didn't practice what they preached. Hell if they can leave it outside so easily then they can let one go pick it up if they miss the delivery as one can with any other company. I am just happy it was still there when I got home.

thanks for the feedback. I called fed ex and Apple and they both said it isn't shipping from the normal fed ex center that most packages ship from (the local center where you can drop/pick up packages from). Since it is via Fed Ex ground and since Apple doesn't let customers pick up their orders anymore from Fed Ex I am essentially screwed. It is shipping from some center an hour from here that doesn't allow customers.

Apple said too many people used fake id's to pick up pacakges at Fed Ex so they only allow it to be shipped directly to the customer or at an alternate address. I have no alternate addy's because everyone works normal business hours. I would have taken off work, If I knew this was going to happen, but I can't take a day off at the last minute during this time of year. And I figured this would be like any other normal fed ex deilvery and I would go pick it up after I was done working tomorrow. what a pain in the ass. I was really excited until now.

Beleive it or not FedEx ground and FedEx as you know them are two separate companies. 2 Years ago, we approached Fed Ex to hedege our bets on a looming UPS strike. Needless to say, Fex Ex ground had their heads up their arses. One fine example, I received a call from someone who lived near Ft Meyers FL. They called our company because they had found some packages on the FREEWAY!!! The were concered because they saw that they were medical supplies. (BTW, my company is in OH) Turns out the driver never latched the door and spilled the contents of his truck all over Interstate what ever it was. Needless to say, FedEx ground does not have a good track record.

The ONLY reason I use the Apple Online store is because it's the only place to get BTO Macs. My brother wasn't satisfied with the measly 30GB HD in the 12" PB and so had to upgrade. BT too. I'm still waiting for the order..
