Poll: Early 2013 rMBP 15" LCD model & IR

I checked two of the 15" 2.4ghz floor models at the Apple Store today and both were SJA1. Maybe the SJA2s started circulating in a later production week sometime after the spec bump.

anyone with sja2 panels willing to share what production week their rMBPs were cranked out? might be useful to those of us looking to purchase, perhaps we could check the serial # before opening one up.

Just got mine a week ago and just checked the terminal command. Mine is Samsung!!! Yeahh!! The model I have is an early 2013.

I'm a mac pro newbie and was following the forum. Thanks for posting about ongoing issues with apple products, it puts you in the 'know' with things. Thanks peeps!! I also wanted to explain how to find the 'terminal' screen as you need to find it before you can even do the test to determine what kind of screen you have. As much as I kept up with the postings I found it difficult to find where it was, until I combed the internet and came across a guy talking about it. So for those newbies like me out there, you can find 'terminal' screen under 'launch pad'. Then select 'other'...

Good luck to everyone else who are interested in purchasing a retina model. They are beautiful machines.

Week 11 (March) but I think there are many built earlier.

Cool, the two floor models were 3rd week of January sja1 2.4ghz eatly 11 ones... I ended up getting a Samsung..they have a method of knowing which ones are Samsung without opening them but aren't supposed to tell us... The specialist said he'd rather just give me a Samsung than have me return a half a dozen macs... Not all of them know about it, we were about to crack one open and see which it had but a coworker jumped in and saved the day and got me the one I wanted.. That was at pioneer place in Portland Oregon. I would have taken an sja2 as well, I'm not sure if they can discern between different models of lg without opening though.. My guess is production week.. Maybe where manufactured for Samsung vs lg

Yesterday (23 April) just bought Early 2013 model of 15"/2.7/16Gb/512GB.

It seems most of serial detectors can't decode this new format.
Widely used http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com/Desktop/index.php
..returns error and only working http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html
was reported not to show accurate built weeks according to some discussions.
Anyone who can compare the two if they reports same data?

Anyway it says for me:
built week 3, January

Unfortunately terminal command reports old revision of LG
LP154WT1-SJA1
DCN249310FJF49KA4

After 24 hours of up-time, no IR problems at all. Not sure if this old SJA1 revision can start IR after some days/weeks. In this case I would better to return the machine in 14 days NQA, and try to buy another one with checking serial number before opening the box, to determine at least later built weeks, which can promise SJA2.

Already went in august 2012 through machine replacement with my previous mid 2012 15" Retina (LG to Samsung) and just don't want to wait again another 1-2 weeks for repair if it happen to this new macbook.

Any thoughts?

I had my rMBP15 BTO and the day it shipped matches up a few days after the week (11) reported by chipmunk.

If you bought it at an Apple Store I don't see any harm in asking if you can exchange out for one with a Samsung panel. Especially in the first 14 days, they can't stop you from getting a full refund in any event. If you're not uncomfortable doing so, escalate to a store manager if need be.

If you ordered it online personally I would treat it differently. I'd let the warranty handle it if any IR popped up.

In other words, as long as it isn't too much of a hassle, try for an exchange. My 2 cents.

BTW, there's no way to identify the panel manufacturer strictly from the serial no. If you're at an Apple Store they'll have to agree to open up a couple for you to find out. BUT I see no harm asking to go even these lengths to get you your Samsung panel.

got the LG SJA2 Screen, ran the IR test for 30 mins on the grey screen, didnt see anything, everything looks good. hopefully it stays like this for months and years. Cheers:D

From this small sample of 35 votes it seems so far that 9 out 10 second generation rMBPs are IR free, with no incidence among the LG SJA2 panels. Let's hope IR does not develop on a later stage of use, especially after the warranty expires.

LP154WT1-SJA1 for my first MacBook Pro 15.4 Retina (september). IR comes six month later... I didn't know it can last so long before it happens. So, don't be too happy if your LG panel seems to be IR free ! :(

I have ordered a second for office (2.7 GHz, 16 GB, 256 GB). Hope I will get Samsung panel. If not, I send it back and reorder until I get Samsung screen. I do not want to have the IR issue once again.

I will answer the poll later, when I will get the new one.

results?

I just received my new 2013 rMBP 15 BTO - 2.7 16GB 256GB from Apple. I have the SJA2 LG screen. I had originally ordered the same BTO before realizing WWDC was around the corner a month ago and had returned it. That unit had the Samsung display.

So within 30 days, same exact computer from apple I received 2 different LCDs. Not sure if I should try the "lottery" as people say and return this one. I wish I had kept the Samsung.

I have a 2013 rMBP 15" 2.7GHz 16GB 512GB

Samsung screen:
Color LCD
LSN154YL01001
DLM312701FRFDR6AH

No problem whatsoever :D

Lp154wt1-sja2

Bought mine May 20, 2013 - 15.4"/2.7Ghz/16GB/512GB. I ran terminal and found out I have a new version LG screen

LP154WT1-SJA2

Ran the display test for 10 minutes (max brightness), then switched to grey background..... NO IR!

Ran the test again for 10 minutes (max brightness), then switched to grey bumpy background..... NO IR

I love this laptop and so far I have no problems. I hope the screen holds up as I really enjoy the display for editing my photography.

I totally agree with you.

Although no IR in my SJA2 so far, the computer chassis is making creaking noises on the left side, unacceptable for $3.5K laptop.

Apple quality control is not up to the high standard it should be, for the amount of money they charge.

Did you do anything about your creaking noises?

so it looks like the new LG panels are with no IR.

I have samsung (2012) replaced from LG which had massive IR. Samsung has light bleed and yellow tint in the middle.

Once I have time, I will ask at apple store to replace that again, due to above problems.

Not happy with retina screen apart from the sharpness/resolution.

I bought my rMBP in the USA, but since I live in Greece the local Apple service are not authorized to provide a replacement. They tried to reseat the bottom cover and tighten the screws but still the left side creaks when pressed. They offered me the option to replace the whole casing including the battery (as part of a warranty repair) but I am not comfortable with such an 'operation' on a brand new computer. It's an issue I can live with and I almost forgot about it, until I read your post...:)
