Tbh TC most people on the Apple Watch sub forum will be passionate about the watch so you’ll mostly get a lot of disagreements.

For me the watch has mostly been a notification band and that works well for me. It’s not my favourite Apple product but it does its job well but I could live without it.

My suggestion would be to put it away for a couple of weeks and see how you get on without it. If you don’t miss it then you have your answer.

As a passionate Apple Watch user, the bolded part seems rather blasphemous to me. You may need an intervention at this point.

I agree with you, though. Before the OP does something he might regret, he should do the test.

I want to address your point about how you protect your watch to the point of wearing long sleeves in the summer - that is very unnecessary. I do all sorts of manual labor while wearing my watch. I do plumbing, construction, chainsawing, wood chipping, splitting, stacking, play with my kid, do CrossFit, swim, go camping, tons of stuff and have not even a single ding on my watch. I’m not saying it’s invincible but your paranoia is unreasonable.

I don't look to my watch to entertain me. It is a tool I use to make my life better. If I felt my watch did not make my life better, it would be off faster than you can say Hello!

I have chosen the Apple Watch for several reasons:
  1. It lets me know when I get important calls (and allows me to answer them). My phone is always on silent 100% of the time.
  2. I get a 5 day (and current) look at the weather with weather alerts. (Carrot Weather for the win!).
  3. Allows me to listen to music via my AirPods while jogging. As well as track my jogs and report them in a nice interface on the iPhone. Being able to glance at my watch and know how many calories I've burned so far today encourages me to get off my ass.
  4. Ability to log into my MacBook Pro and accept Administrator prompts with 2 button clicks.
  5. See my heart rate and process an ECG. See my sleep data in AutoSleep. HeartWatch allows me to see how I'm managing my stress on a daily basis.
  6. I use the iPhone locating ping (audio) all the time to find where I've misplaced my iPhone.
  7. Apple Pay and using my watch to board an airplane was a fun experience that worked really well.

Battery life is amazing, I can easily do 2 days on a charge.

Size is great. The only time I've damaged my watch was when I ran into an edge of a marble countertop with my ENTIRE weight behind it. The gash on the screen is barely noticeable so I didn't replace it even though I have AppleCare+. I've smashed my watch against cement posts, door frames, and door handles - no problem.

Being able to see my wife's exercise habits, challenge her to goals - great for family users.

Going on work trips? Automatically updates to the new timezone - even other countries! Was weird stepping off the plane in Germany and Japan - seeing dozens of people set their watches while mine had updated the moment we hit cell reception.

I'm a big fat man. This watch has assisted in keeping me from becoming 400+ pounds. The monthly exercise challenges have been life changing for me and my wife.

A well-thought and helpful post. You and I share many similar reasons to wear our watch, so thanks for putting it all into words for me!
