This is clearly harmless. It's not Apple's fault if someone with a dirty mind misinterprets this image. This can happen with anything.

It's getting to the point where everything invites criticism. You can't be afraid of some types of criticism or else you never do anything. Apple should keep this billboard up as planned.

No, it is a - perspectively - oversized finger with an octopus on it. A single frame of a movie.
Everything else is your own imagination…
You're telling that an artist, someone with an eye for these things, has drawn this frame (it wasn't animated while they were drawing), looked at it and said "yep, everything fine here, not a single penis in sight, let's send it to Apple".

Macrumors needs to check their facts. It's an ad by AT&T. 🙄
It's an iPhone ad by AT&T which is an Apple partner. Perhaps someone else can elaborate but I would be shocked if Apple allows AT&T, Verizon or any entity to publish content referencing iPhone (in official Apple typeface, no less) without strict guidelines and/or final approval.

At this point, I think it’s an inside job. I can’t imagine all these mistakes happening when there’s a reputable marketing department that actually knows what it’s doing.

No. It's an iPhone ad made by Apple. It's a phone, so they partner with local cell carriers and include their logo. I don't understand why people here haven't noticed that they've been doing this forever. Google image search "iphone billboard" and you'll see many examples.
