iPod Open 6th gen clip w/o putting pressure on screen?

What is the trick to opening the 6th gen nano's clip without putting a finger on the screen? Are you supposed to put a finger on the screen? I wouldn't think so because I would be afraid of breaking the screen.
 
I just keep my thumb on the edge of the case. It's still on the screen, but off to the side.
