I want my textedit files to open in tabs instead of windows. However, I've selected what I believe is the preference for it, and it has not changed anything. Opening new files in textedit still opens in new windows, even when I have other textedit windows open already.

I know that it's possible to make textedit do what I want, because I had it set that way on my old MacBook. I just can't recall how I did it.

"Open folders in tabs" is a preference setting in Finder and hence it refers to actions within Finder itself. In this case, the opening of folders. It has nothing to do with opening documents in another app (in this case TextEdit).

TextEdit doesn't show the tab bar by default, so it's worth enabling if you like to see it even with just the one file open. In TextEdit ... View / Show Tab Bar.

You can also click Windows / Merge Windows to have all open documents/files show as tabs in one window.

To make this the default, the setting is in System Prefences / Dock
