Hi, had this macbook since new, its the 13inch Air mid 2013. Sits on my desk never moves, no liquids around it, hardly use it apart from one or two times a week at the moment. No one else moves or uses it either. Come to open it up as normal to wake it out of sleep mode, and fine the screen as in the picture. Managed to log on without being able to see all seems to work fine apart from half the screen is a mess!!!!
I open and close it (in and out of sleep) And then the grey bit on the screen changed like lighter then darker every time!!
Any suggestions.. cant even put it down to a bloody drop or water damage because its literally not possible?

Thanks for any hep!

We can only see the left side of the display. Could you photograph the entire display (inc. bezels) so we can see if there is any impact damage along the right-hand side which caused the issue?

If the "image" changes as you move the lid, then it's likely just a failure of the internal video cable. That cable bends (and unbends) every time you adjust, or close/open the lid, and goes through the hinge area.
So, it's subject to failure. I don't know if the cable can be replaced as a separate part, or if you have to replace the complete lid.
Take to an Apple store, or an Apple service shop if you have one near you. They can run a test of the clamshell, which is that assembly/LCD panel/cables.
You can try the various Mac resets (NVRAM, SMC, etc), but it really looks like a cable/connection issue.

Hi thanks for the replies, ill attach a picture as requested, but sounds like the cable could be it, the nearest apple shops abou an hour away, so ill take a trip up to find out on the weekend. Baffled me as it hasnt moved since i last used it!!!

(In the photos, i opened and closed the lid a few times, as you can see the pattern differs)

Thanks again!

The grey area does slightly change, but the position on the screen does not change at all.
The part that DID move is the lid (the hinge)!

Can you see any change if you gently move the lid to its furthest open limit, then return to your normal viewing angle? Try this move several times to see if you get any kind of flashing, or if that grey area changes size.

Appriciate your replies, if i move the lid up and down before it obviously is closed and *sleeps* shall we say, the grey area does not differ what so ever, its literally only if i shut it so all the LCD and backlights etc go off and then re open it seems to differ in pattern. For example some areas of the grey but go white around the edge etc.

Bloody nightmare, probs cost more to repair from apple than a 2013 MBA is worth these days??
Had my faith that this would run until dropped or lost too lol
Thanks again.
Tom

Edit - also the difference from the first image uploaded to the next 2 is the fact i typed my password in a logged on?? Weird.

I had the same look on an 2012 Air after I put too much pressure on the lid. The glas was fine but internal damage.

Does it flicker or change slightly when u press a bit with your fingers around the display?

New display would have been 450€. So I sold it

I tried pressing on the back of display lastnight and it didnt differ, ill try pressing around the bezel area later when im home. Sounds a nightmare, if you dont mind me asking, how much did you sell it for with the fault?

The macbook sits on a little stand i bought that keeps the laptop sloped at a slight angle, otherwise ide blame my cat for sitting on it?? But the cat would of just slid off anyway?!

Thanks thought, guess its just see how much i could sell it for, or use it as a desktop and get a new monitor etc as it works fine with an external display.

Thanks
Tom
