OpenAI has updated ChatGPT with support for CarPlay, which means CarPlay users can now ask ChatGPT questions and make requests directly from their vehicle dashboard.

Apple began allowing third-party voice-based conversational apps to interface with CarPlay in iOS 26.4, but apps need to implement the feature and get a special entitlement from Apple.

For the ChatGPT app and other apps that implement CarPlay support, voice has to be the primary method of interaction. Apple says that chatbot apps should not show text or imagery in response to queries.

Apple has a voice control template that apps are required to use. Apps have to display the voice control screen while voice-based services are active, and apps are able to have up to four action buttons. To use ChatGPT with CarPlay, an iPhone running iOS 26.4 or later is required.

CarPlay has supported third-party apps for years, but Apple limits the types of apps that are available to cut down on driver distractions. Apple has a list of allowed app categories, which includes audio apps, communication apps, EV charging apps, and navigation apps.

ChatGPT integration will let users ask questions hands-free, but the chatbot is not able to control vehicle or iPhone functions. There is no wake word, so users will need to open the ChatGPT app to use it.

This sounds so dumb....but Tesla has this with Grok and it's shockingly more useful than I ever thought. It's been really great to have.

Why did you prefix with "sounds so dumb" when you follow up by saying it's great? 🤣

I've experienced Grok in a Tesla and it really is quite neat to have a flowing, casual conversation while driving. Good times are coming for Siri!

So can CarPlay Siri punt questions to CarPlay ChatGPT, or do you always need to start the request in ChatGPT?

You'll need to open the ChatGPT app directly for now, but this is just the beginning.

Rumour: With Siri planned to be an app in iOS 27, that suggests you'll be able to choose which app serves as your Personal Assistant, and that should carry over to the Voice Control button in a car. Press that button and it will invoke your preferred Chat agent.

Right now, it's not hard to do it all hands-free.

"Siri, open ChatGPT", or press the Voice Control button on the steering wheel, and then say "Open ChatGPT".

Is it really that dumb? If I ask siri what the score of a game is, it won't tell me in the car, it will tell me that it can send a link to my phone. How the efffff does that help? Just f'n tell me. This is welcomed.
I have never had an issue asking Siri for a sports score. CarPlay even has a live activity when my favorite team is playing with a live scoreboard.

This is great. When commuting or on longer trips I've often fired up voice chat with AI to brainstorm ideas and whatnot. Having it directly in CarPlay will be a bit safer than fiddling with the phone. It works out great. You have a conversation and then just summerize all your thougts at the end, make a plan for the day, or whatever else. It'll be nice when Siri is a bit better about causal inqueries and better integration, but this is nice in the interim.

When I’m on roadtrips with my friends, we are always looking things up on phones about stuff we pass along the way. Or stuff that comes up in conversation that we don’t know the answer too. I see me using this in the care fairly often.

I’m too lazy to go test this tonight. Doesn’t CarPlay have an accessibility setting that enables launching CarPlay apps by voice? So can we enable that so we can say something like “hey Siri, launch ChatGpt” and then initiate chat with that app? Will that work so you don’t have to touch the screen at all?
