OpenAI today introduced GPT-5, which the company says brings a "significant leap" in intelligence and fewer hallucinations. GPT-5 is supposed to be better at following instructions and minimizing sycophancy.

The model offers improved performance across coding, math, writing, health, visual perception, and more. OpenAI says that GPT-5 is its best coding model to date, with improvements to complex front-end generation and debugging large code repositories.

Along with better coding, GPT-5 has improved writing capabilities and it is better at answering health-related questions.

According to OpenAI, GPT-5 is "significantly less likely to hallucinate" compared to prior models. With web search enabled, GPT-5's responses are 45 percent less likely to include a factual error than GPT-4o, and when thinking, responses are 80 percent less likely to have errors than OpenAI o3.

GPT-5 is less likely to lie to the user about what it is able to complete, or what has been done. It more honestly communicates its actions and capabilities for tasks that are impossible, underspecified, or missing key tools.

There are four personalities that users can select for GPT-5, including Cynic, Robot, Listener, or Nerd. The different personalities are opt-in and let users set how ChatGPT interacts and responds to questions.

GPT-5 is available to all ChatGPT users, but Plus subscribers will get more usage before a limit is imposed, and Pro subscribers can access GPT-5 Pro, a version that has extended reasoning.

When users hit a usage limit, ChatGPT will switch to a mini version of GPT-5 for remaining queries. GPT-5 replaces GPT-4o, OpenAI o3, OpenAI o4-mini, GPT-4.1, and GPT-4.5.

I'm curious who will eventually win the AI war.

There is amazing work being done on many fronts. Exciting times!

This is the first time when I'll agree that Apple is being left in the dust, but I'm sure we'll see a rabbit pulled out of a hat. Apple's smart approach would be to leverage these advancements rather than compete with them.

There is no "intelligence" here .. let's stop spouting that piece of the propaganda.

That's old thinking. How does a brain work? It's a network of neurons, which this AI tech is directly modeled after.

The question to ask is "Is intelligence and an identity of self that closely related?"

No, these LLMs are not alive, not organic, not self-aware, but... could they meet the definition of intelligence?

Up to ~750 million users.

Not a fad.

Really impressive demos for the most part, recommend everyone interested take time to watch it. Staying current with this technology unlocks some really cool use cases.

Claude is still competitive, nearly identical in SWEbench as of Opus 4.1. There are some hurdles to conquer there but it's still a big step up from o3.

Also, they mentioned unlimited usage on Pro. If that's actually true, $200/mo starts to look reasonable for very heavy users of the frontend apps.

It's interesting how people intersect with this. I use it for research and it's mind boggling, yet apparently there are other uses that I know nothing about, that may be more personal. People can become addicted, and it even warns you to stop? So funny. (I'm guessing here as I don't have clue)

If this was the best of the best, why did OpenAI/Sam desperately raise cash right before releasing ChatGPT 5?

Generally companies raise cash *after* releasing something good. Sounds like Sam got scared of Elon's initiatives with xAi's Grok 4.

EDIT:

Yep:
Did OpenAI say it was the best of the best or just their best model to date? Here's from their announcement: "Our smartest, fastest, most useful model yet." Is Grok 4 better than GPT-5 on all benchmarks or just that one? How much can you use Grok 4 for free? Is the cost of the better Grok 4 models and features worth the extra cost over ChatGPT?
