You want Apple to spent 60% of their cash on a non-profitable business?

Where will dividends come from?
Did you mean to write “non-profit company”?

OpenAI has an unusual setup. There is the 501(c)(3) non-profit company “OpenAI, Inc.” (which is basically at the top of the organizational chart

That registered 501(c)(3) non-profit company owns and controls OpenAI GP LLC.

And OpenAI GP LLC controls the for-profit company “OpenAI Global, LLC”.

But also, that for-profit company is a capped-profit company (capped at 100x returns).

And it that for-profit, capped-profit company that Microsoft has an economic interest in.

OpenAI's annual revenue is far far far lower than the amount of money they owe to investors.
I’m curious, how much do they owe investors?

EDIT: Nevermind, I guess I have my answer from Statista

Statista said:
OpenAI stands among the most well-funded machine-learning startups globally, having secured more than 12 billion U.S. dollars in investments as of 2023. Prominent investors in OpenAI include Microsoft and Amazon, with Microsoft contributing one billion U.S. dollars in 2019 and an additional 10 billion U.S. dollars in 2023.

Microsoft really invested a crazy amount into OpenAI....

I wonder what Google's kneejerk reaction to this will be. Sounds like a great time to switch to Kagi, or literally any other search engine.

Three letters.

RSS.

Data brokers and spam ad firms did everything they could to kill your RSS feeds.

If we can destroy their business that's fine by me.

The GPT search engine won't give you the full article anyway. There will be a 'Read more' button to send you to the sites.

I wish there was a stronger reaction than love. So much this exactly.

If anyone buys them it’ll be Microsoft. They are already heavily invested in them.

I don't think Microsoft even needs to buy, they got in on the ground floor with good deals. They've already had their own version of this search engine for a while. OpenAI powers Copilot.

And now it's probably too late for anyone to buy, because they don't need to sell and they expect to be around for the long haul.

Does anyone know how this compares to Kagi's AI solution?
Does anyone here use Kagi? I've been looking at it recently but haven't pulled the trigger, wondered about general thoughts. Feel free to message me if you think it's too off-topic for here.

+1 for Perplexity. I've been using it since I found it, only using google for image search.

Considering it’s still worth less than $100 billion, I’m genuinely surprised Apple hasn’t made an offer to buy this company yet.
That would be a very risky investment. Especially when your competitor is Google, the company who can index real-time data while getting an unlimited supply of data from users using their products.

I love Kagi. It felt really weird during the first few days, having results that were actually useful and relevant to what I needed. Feel free to PM if you have any specific questions.

To me, it's worth every penny.

Expenses of $8.5B vs. only $2.5B of projected revenue this year.

Amazon took a decade to reach profitability, didn't they?

Damn, now I'm waiting for Google Search to be added to https://killedbygoogle.com

Actually, come to think of it, we probably need a killed by OpenAI website.

Anyone else experiencing issues today with Safari and chatGPT? It won't let me click on anything, and I even restarted Safari and my MBP. But it did force me to finally install the app, and that is working fine.

Thanks for sharing this! They're hiring very aggressively now though, which seems to run counter to this narrative. At present they're probably one of the biggest acquirers of office space in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I wonder if they're trying to make a very risky bet of some kind if their very much in the red on projected annual income....

Why two (or more) things? We want one thing. If I ask a question to an AI assistant, I should be able to expand that easily into something like search results to read into the sources of its answer. I don’t want to use two or more apps.

This shows plain as day just how aggressive Altman and ChatGPT are going to be. (If you weren’t already convinced by how they handled Scarlett Johansson’s refusal to be the voice of their service.)

There is a hubris at work that is staggering. They will eat entire industries given enough runway, and I don’t think we even have a grasp yet on how many people will wind up unemployed by the end of this. (I work in an industry that’s affected, and this is just the beginning, we are in the early days.)

This is a shark in the water. There isn’t a tech company out there that shouldn’t be concerned about the existential threat that ChatGPT poses. Including Apple. I am grateful that Apple tries to protect our privacy, but I worry about how that approach could hobble their AI ambitions in the longer term.

I understand that many, maybe most, will think I’m overreacting, and I won’t be able to respond to all those comments but to say, I think sometime in the next 5-10 years we are going to look back in despair and wonder how it all happened so fast.

This is all Apple needs to spotlight and to win Google. Steve Jobs would have buy OpenAI today.

The trouble with Copilot and Gemini is they could give you completely nonsensical answers unless you expressly tell them to include their sources for you to do further reading. I appreciate that ChatGPT intends to be transparent with its sources.

Anything that loosen's Google's grip on search is fine by me. It's time for a transformative shift, and this could be it.

I've tried so many times to break the Google habit, but I just haven't found anything that compares in terms of expected results.
