How will we communicate with the device without screen? Will we all start talking to devices everywhere we go?

As long as it’s speach depended technology it has no chance to pick up. Same as none of assistants really picked up. Siri, Alexa, Bixpy - all was interesting until we realised we don’t want to talk to devices. + it’s too slow communication medium. You can glance at the text and get a lot of info or scan it for information. Can’t do that with speech interface.

Maybe some human brain interface but that is 500+ years in the future. After 2 or 3 AI collapses and resurrections.

People forget that Sir Jony Ive was pretty ineffectual without Steve to constrain his wild ideas. When you understand the dynamic then you realize that this one is Open AI product is doomed to fail. When Ive gets to go all-in on his unconstrained ideas then it's a disaster.

Jony was also ineffectual when he ran out of Braun products to directly copy. (Great artists steal, eh?)

Not that I want Ive back at Apple, but I'm really annoyed that he (and Jobs's wife) are working with OpenAI. It feels like a stab in the back to Steve and Apple.

That's the latest rumor I have heard.

I can see it now....Sam and Jony on stage, "Today, OpenAI has reinvented the pen."

"The gadget – pitched as a "third core device" that would sit in your pocket, or on your desk alongside a MacBook Pro and iPhone – apparently won't be an in-ear device or a wearable"

It certainly would fit the description and if done well could be quite interesting. Being able to access everything you write/draw on paper, all seamlessly logged, searchable and available in digital along with a microphone to summarise conversations could be a very powerful and original tool. It also fits Altman's love of notepads and Ive's reinventing analog devices/mechanisms (see Apple Watch digital crown and all the buttons, switches and dials on his latest Ferrari interior work)

The Ferrari cockpit he designed is pretty cool. But you have to be able to afford a Ferrari to really give a damn about it.

I thought the plan was always to debut and showcase the product later this year before releasing it for public sale the year after? À la Apple Watch.

If Apple integrates AI into EarPods or the AW then is there a reason for a device like this from OpenAI? Just for those who are in need of this function.

Do we really need another device or AI pin? This thing could also be placed in those smart rings.

If they weren’t just sitting around in bars, maybe it would get finished faster. Or maybe it will “ship late,” just like Apple’s AI.

ChatGPT and OpenAI are first movers and a proof of concept, but their problem is that they are not part of an ecosystem. When Google and Apple integrate AI solutions directly into their own user interfaces, the question arises: what is the role of a standalone ChatGPT anymore? Microsoft has Copilot, which is of course based on ChatGPT, but soon these will be just another wave of technology solutions appearing everywhere. In the end, the winner is the one who owns the window to the user, the ecosystem. OpenAI is a massive bubble.

And another massive infringement suit has been threatened by Apple if Ive uses the word Aluuu-minn-eee-uuum or Altman speaks the words "we think you'll love it".

On a more serious note: I have a totally bogus, sneaky feeling Ive would be happy if the whole AI bubble pops and this gets shelved/back-burnered before he's committed to deliver as I think it has a high probability to flop and do serious reputational damage to Ive... not because he's terrible, but because the world, tech and AI isn't ready for this nut to be cracked

I predict OpenAI will be bankrupt in less than a year, and this product will never be released.

The AI bubble is already popping before our eyes. Companies spending hundreds of billions annually, and consumers are not embracing it and in fact pushing back to the point where Microslop and nVidia CEO's are asking people to stop disparaging AI. And tech stocks have had a rough week as companies dumping massive amounts of money into AI datacenters are seeing billions (and hundreds of billions in the case of Microsoft and nVidia) in value being wiped out.

"Delayed" - at the current rate of OpenAI's losses this "device" will never see the sun rising...
Typical over promise and under deliver.

OpenAI's first Jony Ive-designed hardware device won't ship to customers until next year, new court filings show (via Wired).

The motion stems from a trademark infringement lawsuit filed last year by audio device startup iyO. The company sued OpenAI after the latter acquired io, a startup founded by Apple's former design chief.

OpenAI's original stated goal was to ship the ChatGPT-powered device before the end of 2026. But in the latest filing, the company said its first hardware device won't ship to customers before the end of February 2027. OpenAI has not created any packaging or marketing materials for its first hardware device either, according to the documents.

The filing also said that OpenAI had reviewed its product-naming strategy and "decided not to use the name 'io' (or 'IYO,' or any capitalization of either) in connection with the naming, advertising, marketing, or sale of any artificial intelligence-enabled hardware products."

Few details are known about the first AI consumer product that OpenAI is working on. The gadget – pitched as a "third core device" that would sit in your pocket, or on your desk alongside a MacBook Pro and iPhone – apparently won't be an in-ear device or a wearable, based on previous filings related to this lawsuit.

Previous leaks have revealed that the gadget will be pocket-sized, contextually aware of your surroundings and life, and completely screen-free. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman apparently told OpenAI staff it's "the coolest piece of technology that the world will have ever seen" after testing Ive's prototype at home.

The development comes as now-debunked rumors circulated on Reddit over the weekend claiming that OpenAI had pulled a Super Bowl ad unveiling its upcoming device. The now-deleted post shared an alleged ad featuring actor Alexander Skarsgård in silver headphones, tapping a reflective puck. The video was widely circulated on social media, including by Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian.

It will probably look like a square pebble clipped effortlessly to your clothing, humanized with harmonious rounded corners, polished chamfered edges, crystal black glass, titanium/aluminum or polycarbonate casing, available also in ceramic white, wireless charger, thinner than ever... blah blah blah

Jony Ive's Ferrari is pretty much his go-to rinse and repeat now. I'd imagine this will look nothing different.

Gemini is much better now. I’m a bit concerned just how much ChatGPT can skew answers to match a certain tone from past conversations around certain personal things/people. I now find myself going to Gemini to get a ‘fresh’ take.
