Ahh ok.. so different setup. You're not doing same thing as me. Perhaps you would have same issue if you did it. I have ALL my Apple purchased movies downloaded locally on the 2TB drive I put in these so I can play them anywhere and not HAVE to have internet. I also have 3 Apple TV devices in the house but I don't use often as you have to STREAM everything and really can't store anything locally on them, which I think is stupid...then what's the point.. go over my data cap on cable every month.. I just went over it for the 2nd time this year yesterday. 1.2TB limit.. yay Comcast.
I just tried using Apple TV from my laptop using my HDMI output and just like you the video won't play on an external display. Just confirmed this with the latest OS update (15.3 beta).

Luckily, I have a workaround to this issue which works for me . . .

This is part of the reason I have stored my movie collection onto my 2TB SSD on my MBP so that I can stream them directly onto my big screen TV any time I want to watch them. The Apple TV is used to stream shows on the most part. At least this is how I use my setup. It has worked out very well for me so far but also nice to have plenty of hardware on reserve to set it up this way :)
Right...but as I've been saying since Sonoma/OCLP 1.5, my 2015MBP will not play them with an external monitor attached in any way..thru TB2 dock or directly with HDMI...that's why I'm sticking to Monterey for now

I'm using my 11" AIR w 8GB using OCLP 2.2.0 and have Sonoma 15.2 installed. So far this OS has been usable on this trusty laptop.

i wonder if the i5 version also will run well. Anyone with other versions besides i7 who can answer, please?

I'm running OS 15.3 beta on my 13-inch MBP i5 and it has been running very well on that laptop. My guess is that it should run decent on yours.

thanks a lot, very helpful. I deeply appreciate your help. In fact, it was your comments that got me interested. But you had earlier only shown i7. Now I know i5 also will work. Too bad, I had since passed on several really cheap i5s. Oh, well....I can imagine these machines staying on for long. I have a 2012 MPB, 17inc, with dosdude still going on, but no more support for Catalina and so i must move on, the reason why i'm looking on this path.

Here's what apple says about these laptops, concerning processors.

Processor

  • 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz) with 3MB shared L3 cache
    • Configurable to 2.2GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz) with 4MB shared L3 cache.
Perhaps I could learn from here why I keep seeing only i5 with 1.6GHz. Where the rest sold in certain markets only?

It depends on what computer you're looking to get and then have OCLP installed on it to install the current MacOS on. Until I know exactly what laptop you intend to install OpenCore on I can't be of any help. Too many variables.

This is why I chose the Early 2015 11-inch MBA, which is what I'm typing this response on, to install OCLP 2.2.0 and MacOS 15.3 beta on. This laptop runs this OS in an acceptable speed. It is not instant like it is on my 2024 14-inch M3 PRO MBP as there are some lagging but it is not too bad. For what my Air is, it does a great job running the current OS with only 8GB RAM. Not bad if you ask me. For me it was key to have the most current OCLP version installed first before upgrading the OS.

Once you have the OS installed, you then run root patches thru OpenCore and everything should work.

Hi, what about this one: MacBook Air 13inch 2015 1,6 GHz i5, 4GB RAM,

Hi, what about this one: MacBook Air 13inch 2015 1,6 GHz i5, 4GB RAM,
I wouldn't do OCLP on anything less than 8gb.. I've seen that mentioned before.. 4gb is already pushing it for even last supported OS for that model(Monterey) for anything other than light web browsing and email. I have the 8gb 2015 and had OCLP/Sequoia on it from 1/6 until yesterday. I reloaded Monterey as I didn't care for the intermittent stutter that it had. Monterey works great on it so I think I'll stick with that for now.

Don't go with any laptop with 4GB RAM. Your user experience with current MacOS, assuming you can get it to run on this amount of RAM, won't be a great one. My 2015 Air only came with 8GB max and it runs the current OS good enough that I can use it to watch videos, catch up on my emails and web browse without any issue.

If you have an MBA 2013 or newer with an Intel CPU and only 4 GB of RAM, I would advise only to go with macOS Ventura, it still gets security updates for at least this Autumn 2025.

My best advise for an MBA 2015-2017 would be to opt for the intel Core i7 ones with 2.2 GHz CPUs, although the Core i5 should be okay as well, but go with 8 GB of RAM.

I successfully updated my two MBA 2015 with Intel Core i7 2.2 GHz CPU and two Fanxiang 1TB Apple compatible 12+16 pin SSDs to Mac OS Sequoia multipe times (in place updates) starting from macOS Sequoia 15.1 they are now running macOS Sequoia 15.3.

One thing I noticed, after the Sequoia update was done, the first login took quite a long time and when you enter your password, it is really slow, after you re-run the Open Core Legacy Patcher and all is then patched, the next login will be as fast as before the update, so do not be alarmed if your first login takes a long time and also typing the password seems not to work at first, it is simply extremely slow to enter the letters in that password field.
