Apple quality control has really taken a hit as they’ve expanded over the last decade or so. I’m not sure I would say it’s common, but yes, I do think it happens regularly.

I always make sure to open my Apple products and thoroughly inspect them right away now.

Nope. It is tens of thousands of employees working long days on an assembly line in factories across China, Vietnam, Malaysia, India, Brasil, etc.

Call Verizon, then Apple. Either should issue an exchange immediately. That’s a bummer.

My luck, I’d keep it and the gouges would start flaking and get worse.

It’s fine. They are sending me a new one under the worry free guarantee. The problem is it’s on back order til the 15th of November. Just careless nonsense.

Does this happen regularly?

First batch(es) of Apple produces always have more hardware defects. My guess is that the first batches are rushed or they have not figured out the best process.

I have stopped doing pre-orders or buying at launch entirely for this reason, having done it for many years and received (to differing severely) defective devices 100% of the time.

Then I broke my own rule and bought the iPhone 14 Pro because I had to -- my old phone was breaking -- and it came with a freaking loose lightning port, so that it would charge on and off when plugged in or when I jiggle it when plugged in. Absurd, but other people reported the same thing on here.

Now I buy newly released devices only January or February at the earliest. I have not gotten any devices with hardware defects since I started doing this.

Whenever I mentioned this I have to preempt the knee-jerk Apple defenders on here who'd say, "Mine was perfect. Mine was perfect. Mine was perfect." Yes, I KNOW most people received flawless devices. But it is also a fact that more people receive defective devices when they first launch.
