I used to use Open Office. I would like to stick to using just Numbers on my new Mac so if I could avoid installing Open Office I would be happy.

I have a few ODS files from Open Office on my old computer that I would like to use. They are pretty basic, mostly just typical font and cell manipulation. A couple have some very basic calculations of some cells.

Will I be able to convert these into Numbers? If so, what is the best approach?

I saved them as xls in Open Office, then opened them in Numbers. It seems to have worked.

Using Numbers is a little wacky, totally different than Excel or Calc.
