right now, when i click on a pdf in firefox, it opens it in preview, but i also find the file in my downloads. i like how the pdf opens in a separate preview window, but it's a hassle to have to keep deleting the file from downloads after i view it. am i just not configuring firefox properly?

You're doing it right. Preview can't open pictures on the internet. They must be saved on the drive.

The best way to avoid saving the file is to download the Firefox PDF plugin. There is one, just look it up in Mozilla extensions. It works very well, except one thing: you can't go to the previous page using the three-finger gesture, as it is used to go up or down of one page.

    I highly recommend it.

Maybe, but I don't know how to do it. The easiest way is to press cmd while clicking on a link. It opens any link in a new tab.
